Description
Chika Ogiue is a central character introduced in the latter half of the original Genshiken manga and its subsequent anime adaptations, playing an even more prominent role in Genshiken: Second Generation. She is a university student from the Tohoku region of Japan, who actively suppresses her rural accent upon moving to Tokyo, though it tends to slip out during moments of high stress or excitement.

Physically, Ogiue is petite with short black hair that she often ties into a distinctive, spiky top-knot, and she has darkish-purple eyes. A notable visual marker of her emotional state is the gleam in her eyes; initially, they lack reflective highlights, giving her a closed-off and cold appearance. As she gradually opens up to others and accepts herself, her eyes begin to shine, reflecting her inner change. She has very poor eyesight and typically wears contact lenses but occasionally uses her old glasses, which can serve as a kind of disguise. Her fashion sense evolves over the course of the series, starting with plain, oversized clothing that seems intended to hide her figure. As she becomes more confident and enters a relationship, her wardrobe becomes more stylish and fitted, though she reverts to practical, plain clothes when deeply focused on her artwork.

Ogiue's personality is initially defined by intense self-loathing and hostility towards otaku culture, despite being one herself. She is a self-professed otaku-hater, a claim that masks a deep-seated shame about her own hobbies, particularly her passion for creating yaoi, or boys' love, doujinshi. This shame is rooted in a traumatic incident from junior high school. At a friend's request, she drew a yaoi doujinshi featuring a boy named Makita whom she liked and was secretly dating. When Makita found the manga, the ensuing humiliation was so severe that he transferred schools, leaving Ogiue with lasting psychological scars that cause her to react to embarrassment by trying to flee or even harm herself, such as by jumping out of windows.

Her primary motivation throughout her early appearances is to deny her otaku identity and hide her interests from others. This changes when she is effectively forced to join the Genshiken, the university's Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture. Through her interactions with the club's members, especially Kanji Sasahara, she begins to confront her past and the source of her trauma. Unlike many other members who fully embrace their hobbies, Ogiue's journey is one of acceptance, making her a focal point for exploring the internal conflicts an otaku can face.

In the story, Ogiue serves as a skilled artist for the club, collaborating with Mitsunori Kugayama on their doujinshi projects. Her artistic ability is so considerable that she eventually receives a professional publishing deal for her yaoi manga, which she produces under pen names like Ogino Naruyuki and Yukimian, with her series Anata no Tonari gaining recognition. In Genshiken: Second Generation, her role expands significantly as she succeeds Kanako Ohno as the president of the Genshiken. In this leadership capacity, her ability to draw is instrumental in recruiting new members; she creates a large, attention-grabbing illustration during the club recruitment drive that attracts three first-year students, including the cross-dressing Kenjirou Hato. She later hires these new members to be her assistants for her professional manga work.

Key relationships heavily influence her development. Her bond with Kanji Sasahara is the most crucial. He is patient and understanding of her yaoi fantasies, even becoming a subject for her anatomically accurate drawings, which allows her to feel less ashamed of her interests. They eventually enter a romantic relationship, which is a major milestone in her journey toward self-acceptance. She also forms important friendships with Saki Kasukabe, who affectionately nicknames her Ogichin, and with Kanako Ohno, who playfully teases her and even convinces her to participate in cosplay.

Ogiue's notable abilities lie almost entirely in her artistic talent. She is a highly skilled manga artist specializing in yaoi, with a particular fondness for parodying popular shonen series. Her creative process becomes more open and integrated into her life as she overcomes her past traumas, transforming from a source of shame into a professional career and a core part of her identity.
