OVA
Description
Moena Shinguji is a young student attending an academy in a dystopian future where humanity resides in floating cities above a polluted Earth. Orphaned after her mother’s death and her father’s disappearance, she was raised by her aunt Kyoka, who runs a cafe on the academy campus. Moena works there as a waitress, leading a seemingly ordinary school life. She possesses a heart-shaped amulet given to her by her parents, which grants her the ability to transform into the superheroine Angel Blade. Initially, she is unaware of this dual life; her transformation happens involuntarily whenever danger arises, with Angel Blade acting as a separate, heroic personality. Near the end of the first episode, the pendant is damaged, leaving Moena’s own consciousness in control of the Angel Blade body, and from that point she becomes fully aware of her alter ego.

As a person, Moena is portrayed as earnest and kind-hearted, but also naive and not overly developed physically or emotionally. Her primary motivation is to protect innocent women from the mutants and villains of the Dark Mother organization, led by Phantom Lady. She feels a strong sense of justice, yet she is vulnerable to her own hormones: sexual encounters are a notable weakness that can render her helpless, a flaw that villains frequently exploit. She also struggles with the revealing nature of her battle outfit, which was designed by her parents without clear explanation.

In the story, Moena serves as the main protagonist of the original Angel Blade OVA and its sequel, Angel Blade Punish!. Her role is to fight against the mutants that emerge from the floating castle of Dark Mother, bringing justice to City Number 69. She is not alone in this mission; she develops key relationships with other heroines. She teams up with Shaiya Hishizaki, a famous supermodel who transforms into Angel Ender, and later with Elphie Elfman, a cowgirl who becomes Angel Beretta. Moena also befriends and collaborates with the police officer Ayame Fudo, though Ayame frequently ends up in peril. Romantic or intimate bonds are formed with both Seiryu Tenmyoin and Elphie Elfman over the course of the series.

Moena undergoes noticeable development as the story progresses. In the original series, she gradually accepts her identity as Angel Blade and learns to fight alongside her allies. In Angel Blade Punish!, she loses her powers temporarily after a brutal assault by the villain Widow, leading to a crisis of confidence. With the help of Elphie, she experiences a transformative vision that unlocks her latent true power: the ability to manipulate gravity. This power awakens only when lives are in great danger and is considered her ultimate ability.

Angel Blade’s fighting style revolves around a sword that she generates from her heart-shaped pendant. She can also summon an Angel Motor, a motorcycle-like vehicle, for transportation and combat, though she does not use it in the Punish! episodes. In moments of extreme peril, she enters a super mode characterized by glowing white eyes and energy wings, greatly enhancing her power. Her true gravity-based power emerges later and is her most formidable asset. Despite these abilities, her weakness to sexual stimulation remains a constant vulnerability that antagonists exploit throughout the narrative.
