OVA
Description
Masato Shikibu is one of the four main pilots of the Cyber Beast Force, the elite military unit that operates the super robot Dancouga. He hails from the Iwate Prefecture in Japan, where his family was wealthy owing to his father’s position as the head of an arms-manufacturing plant. Despite his father’s expectations, Masato chose to enter the military academy, enrolling as a sixth-team trainee. He is the youngest member of the Cyber Beast Force, a fact that initially shapes both his role in the team and his personal growth.

In terms of personality, Masato is an active and energetic young man, though he can be somewhat immature compared to his older comrades. This immaturity often manifests as comic relief during tense situations, yet it never undermines his dedication to the mission. What he lacks in combat experience, he compensates for with emotional strength and a sincere desire to protect others. He is loyal to his teammates and forms a particularly close bond with Laura Sullivan, a young girl who is adopted by Professor Hazuki. Masato’s friendship with Laura and her dog Becky is a recurring source of warmth and stability for him.

Masato’s primary motivation is to defend Earth from the alien Muge Zorbados Empire alongside his fellow pilots. He is driven by a sense of duty and a personal commitment to his friends, which becomes more pronounced after personal losses. In the OVA God Bless Dancouga, his father is killed in an engagement with a Muge survivor, an event that deepens his resolve and adds a layer of emotional weight to his character by the time of Blazing Epilogue.

Within the Cyber Beast Force, Masato pilots the Land Liger, a tank-type machine that transforms into a tiger-like beast and later into a humanoid robot. He is one of the four component pilots whose machines combine to form the giant robot Dancouga. In the original television series and the subsequent OVAs, his role is that of the team’s agile and sometimes hot-headed member, but he matures over the course of the story. In Blazing Epilogue, the final OVA, the Cyber Beast Force members are brought together one last time to face a revived threat from their former ally turned enemy, Shapiro Keats. Masato reunites with Shinobu Fujiwara, Sara Yuki, and Ryo Shiba, and he once again takes his place as the pilot of the Land Liger, contributing to the team’s combined strength in their climactic battle.

Masato’s key relationships are central to his development. He looks up to his more experienced teammates, especially the calmer Ryo Shiba and the straightforward Shinobu, while sharing a sibling-like camaraderie with Sara. His friendship with Laura Sullivan grounds him and reminds him of what he is fighting for. Over the course of the series and OVAs, Masato evolves from a somewhat impulsive youth into a more dependable soldier, learning to channel his emotional energy into effective combat and teamwork.

Notable abilities include his proficiency in piloting the Land Liger, which requires not only technical skill but also the emotional intensity necessary to trigger the machine’s full Beast Mode transformation. His emotional resilience, though it sometimes makes him reckless, also allows him to push through difficult battles when others might falter. Masato’s growth is defined by his ability to balance his youthful passion with the discipline needed to fight alongside his comrades and operate the combined Dancouga.
