Dr. Morio Osanai, a central antagonist at the Institute for Psychiatric Research, masks professional envy toward colleagues Dr. Atsuko Chiba and Dr. Kōsaku Tokita beneath a veneer of collegiality. Aligned with Chairman Seijirō Inui, he conspires to weaponize the DC Mini technology, merging dreams with reality to assert dominance and manipulate subconscious minds. His calculated maneuvers include exploiting Kei Himuro—Tokita’s assistant—through coercive tactics to secure stolen prototypes, an act he later disdains yet rationalizes.
Osanai’s aggression intensifies as he entraps Paprika, Chiba’s dream persona, in a chamber of preserved butterflies—a macabre metaphor for his history of preying on women. Here, he assaults her, stripping away her dream-form to target Chiba’s unconscious body, aiming to shatter her psyche. His alliance with Inui fractures under diverging ambitions: Inui prioritizes eliminating threats, while Osanai fixates on preserving Chiba, conflating possession with twisted affection.
Driven by narcissism and spite, he invades Detective Konakawa’s dreams, forcing him to relive trauma through near-fatal strangulation. Konakawa retaliates within the dreamscape, fatally wounding Osanai—a metaphysical strike that extinguishes his physical life. Osanai’s arc, devoid of redemption, unfolds through serial predation, psychological torture, and violent ambition, cementing his role as a catalyst for the narrative’s existential clash between dreams and control.
