Description
Joe Shimamura, designated Cyborg 009, is a half-Japanese orphan raised by a Catholic priest in Kanazawa. His mother died shortly after birth, leaving him at the church; his father was likely an American soldier stationed in post-WWII Japan. As a child, he endured bullying and prejudice due to his mixed heritage, forming bonds with fellow orphans like Yasu. Many friends vanished after foster placements, later revealed trafficked by Black Ghost through the priest's involvement. When the priest tried to expose Black Ghost, he was murdered and the church burned. Discovering the scene, Joe was wrongfully accused of the murder. An accident during police transport enabled his escape, leading to a confrontation where he leapt off a cliff into the ocean. Black Ghost agents recovered him for cybernetic experimentation, transforming him into Cyborg 009.

Post-transformation, Joe grappled with fragmented memories and distrust but was guided telepathically by Cyborg 001 (Ivan Whisky/Asimov) to escape. He joined the rebellion of eight other cyborgs and their remorseful creator, Dr. Gilmore. Learning of Black Ghost's global arms-dealing operations profiting from instigated wars, Joe committed to fighting the organization, overcoming self-doubt. This forged a lasting familial bond with the team, helping him confront past traumas like the priest's death and his biological mother's identity.

Joe embodies idealism, compassion, and a strong aversion to killing, often believing in enemies' potential redemption. His experiences foster deep empathy for fellow cyborgs; he frequently appeals to their morality to turn them against Black Ghost, though these efforts often fail due to organizational coercion. A self-sacrificing nature drives him to shoulder burdens alone, sometimes neglecting teammates' emotional needs during crises—such as prioritizing Princess Ixquic's suffering over Great Britain's grief in "The City of Wind," causing friction. Despite his pacifism, he fights decisively to protect innocents or allies. His heroic resolve stems from childhood losses, fueling a desire to protect all life, even adversaries. Adaptations depict a romantic connection with Cyborg 003 (Françoise Arnoul), with explicit development varying by medium.

As the most advanced 00 Cyborg, Joe possesses combined attributes: Geronimo Jr.'s (005) superhuman strength and iron skin, Pyunma's (008) underwater breathing, and an enhanced version of Jet Link's (002) acceleration module. His signature ability, Acceleration Mode, activates via a switch in his back molar, enabling Mach 5 movement. This speed renders surroundings nearly motionless but risks severe injury or death to non-cyborgs from air friction during physical contact. In the GOD'S WAR OVA, Ivan unlocks Joe's latent psychic potential, enabling faster-than-light movement and molecular acceleration on contact, causing explosions. Joe also wields a multi-mode gun with settings including freeze rays, sleep rays, and blasters.

Across media, Joe confronts threats beyond Black Ghost, like the subterranean Yomi Kingdom, rogue cyborgs, mythological entities, and interdimensional beings. In the GOD'S WAR arc, his abilities reach cosmic scales against deific adversaries. His leadership evolves from reluctant responsibility to steadfast resolve, particularly in the Yomi arc where Black Ghost's leader, Skull—later revealed as a brain-in-a-jar cyborg—meets his end. Skull embodies Joe's antithesis: a sadistic arms dealer manipulating global conflict, their conflict symbolizing compassion versus exploitation. Spin-offs like Cyborg 009 VS Devilman depict Joe collaborating with non-series heroes against existential threats, reinforcing his commitment to universal peace. The cyborg team and Dr. Gilmore remain his foundational support throughout these struggles.
