Description
Laxus Dreyar, grandson of Fairy Tail's guild master Makarov Dreyar and son of Raven Tail's master Ivan Dreyar, joined Fairy Tail as a child. Resentment festered within him over perceived favoritism due to his lineage, feeling his own achievements were overshadowed by his grandfather's reputation. This bitterness deepened after Ivan's excommunication from Fairy Tail for endangering members, leading Ivan to form Raven Tail. Laxus achieved S-Class Mage status at age 17 in X778.
Initially arrogant and dismissive of weaker guildmates, Laxus prioritized Fairy Tail's strength above all else. He openly mocked comrades, demanded concessions for assistance, and belittled his closest followers, the Thunder God Tribe (Freed Justine, Evergreen, and Bickslow). During the Phantom Lord conflict, he refused aid unless Lucy Heartfilia dated him and Cana Alberona stripped. His contempt culminated in the Battle of Fairy Tail arc, where he orchestrated a guild takeover: petrifying members during the Miss Fairy Tail contest, confining Makarov, and unleashing Thunder Palace—a spell designed to destroy Magnolia with lightning lacrima. He battled Mystogan, Natsu Dragneel, and Gajeel Redfox, escalating to Fairy Law to annihilate the guild and town. The spell failed because his heart still recognized them as allies, a fact he denied. Defeated, Makarov tearfully expelled him.
Exile prompted profound change. Laxus watched Fairy Tail's Fantasia parade from afar, moved to tears by Makarov's silent message of enduring guardianship. He briefly joined Blue Pegasus with the Thunder God Tribe after Fairy Tail's temporary disbandment but returned upon its reformation. His redemption solidified during the Tenrou Island arc when he intercepted Grimoire Heart's leader Hades, declaring, "Master’s enemies are my enemies." He later rejoined officially after Gildarts conveyed Makarov's approval.
Laxus wields Lightning Magic, generating and manipulating electricity for attacks, propulsion, or blinding flashes. He can transform into lightning for high-speed movement and intangibility. His primary power is Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, granted by a dragon lacrima implanted by Ivan during childhood, making him a Second Generation Dragon Slayer. This allows lightning consumption for healing and grants immunity to electricity. Key techniques include Lightning Dragon’s Roar (a rapid, paralyzing breath attack), Thunder Palace (destructive lightning orbs), Red Lightning (Raikô: Akamikazuchi, explosive crimson lightning bypassing conventional immunity), and Secret Arts like Roaring Thunder (high-impact spells such as his one-strike defeat of Wizard Saint Jura Neekis). He exhibits Dragon Slayer motion sickness but conceals this vulnerability. Physically, he is tall and muscular with a lightning-bolt scar, tribal tattoos encircling his Fairy Tail mark, and sharpened canines.
Post-redemption, Laxus retains his formidable prowess but channels it protectively. He single-handedly defeated Raven Tail (including Ivan), overwhelmed Tartaros’s demon gate Tempester while poisoned by anti-magic particles, and injured Spriggan 12 members—Ajeel (nearly fatally) and Wahl Icht (despite Wahl's lightning immunity and his own lingering ailments). He later one-shotted a revived Hades.
His personality evolved into that of a calm, loyal protector, though he remains reserved. He leads the Thunder God Tribe with mutual respect and shoulders burdens alone to shield comrades. Makarov later entrusted him as a successor, reflecting his growth from antagonist to cornerstone of Fairy Tail’s strength.
