Description
John Marty, a runaway slave, is forcibly conscripted into the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. The March family finds him amid the Confederate occupation of their Pennsylvania town, sheltering him at significant personal risk by hiding him from soldiers until Confederate forces withdraw—an act of defiance against fugitive slave laws. When the Union Army arrives and the March home is destroyed in battle, John journeys by train to Boston seeking Northern freedom. He later returns to Newcord, the anime's rendition of Concord, Massachusetts, securing work as a printer at *The Newcord Times*, a newspaper owned by Henry Murdoch. Murdoch hires him irrespective of race, demonstrating the publisher's equitable approach. John Marty's narrative highlights the historical perils confronting 19th-century African Americans, including recapture threats even in Northern states, while emphasizing resistance and the March family's dedication to justice in this Civil War adaptation.
