Description
Noboru Terao, a junior high school student, shares a deep childhood friendship with Mikako Nagamine. Their bond strengthens through everyday routines: walking home together, sharing ice cream, and confiding dreams and aspirations. This connection forms a powerful emotional foundation before their separation.

When Mikako is recruited by the UN Space Army to combat alien forces, Noboru remains on Earth. Their sole communication becomes text messages exchanged via mobile phones. As Mikako's spacecraft journeys deeper into space, the transmission delays for these messages grow exponentially, eventually stretching into years. Initially addressing her formally as "Nagamine," reflecting their school dynamic, Noboru's emotional dependence deepens with the increasing distance. His anxiety mounts while waiting for each reply, and his form of address shifts to her first name, "Mikako."

The extreme message delays inflict significant emotional strain on Noboru. He tries to move forward with life on Earth, attending high school and forming a tentative relationship with a girl from his archery club. Despite these efforts, his thoughts remain fixated on Mikako, and he grapples with the feeling that his existence is defined by waiting for her messages. A message Mikako sent in 2047 takes over eight years to arrive, reaching Noboru when he is 24. By then, he has aged into adulthood, while time dilation preserves Mikako's younger physical appearance.

In the manga adaptation, Noboru's story continues beyond the anime. As an adult, he enlists in the UN military. He is assigned to a rescue mission tasked with retrieving the Lysithea spacecraft and its crew. Mikako discovers his participation only after consulting the mission roster, revealing his commitment to actively reuniting with her after years of separation. This choice marks his transition from passive waiting to determined pursuit, driven by his enduring connection to Mikako.
