Description
Damian Desmond is the second son of Donovan Desmond, leader of Ostania's National Unity Party, and Melinda Desmond. His older brother, Demetrius Desmond, is an Imperial Scholar at Eden Academy. Damian's privileged position within the influential Desmond family confers high social status but also brings immense pressure to meet family expectations, especially his father's approval. Driven by Donovan's neglect and emotional distance, Damian strives to become an Imperial Scholar, believing academic success will earn his recognition. This fuels deep-seated insecurities and a fear of being perceived as a family failure.

Initially arrogant and entitled, Damian demands peers address him as "Lord Damian" and treats those he deems inferior, particularly Anya Forger, with condescension. His early behavior involves bullying and insults, stemming from misinterpreted social cues and a need to assert dominance. This masks significant vulnerability: Damian harbors low self-esteem and emotional fragility, often worsened by his father's indifference. He experiences intense jealousy over his brother's achievements and feels burdened by the Desmond legacy.

Damian's character evolves through key events. After Anya punches him during a confrontation, he develops an unacknowledged crush, leading to frequent embarrassment and conflicted actions. Despite initial hostility, he demonstrates selflessness: protecting Anya in dodgeball by taking an eliminating hit, defending her against false rumors about her Stella Star, and attempting to take a bomb from her during a Red Circus bus hijacking. These reveal underlying nobility and courage.

Academically, Damian excels in History, earning three Stella Stars for top scores, including the second-highest midterm grade and highest term finals grade. He struggles significantly with Language Studies, resulting in poor vocabulary and assignment to Class F alongside Anya the following term. He possesses notable physical endurance, evidenced by resilience against larger opponents like Bill Watkins. His known fears include scoleciphobia, causing extreme panic when confronted with worms.

Damian's family relationships remain strained. He idolizes his father despite Donovan's neglect and is visibly moved when Melinda retrieves him after the hijacking, begging her not to reveal his tears to Donovan. Recent revelations about Donovan's mind-reading ability add complexity; Donovan's dismissive reaction to Damian's plea for attention in chapter #38 suggests awareness of Damian's thoughts, implying either an inability to empathize or active annoyance. Desmond family dinners depict tension and fear, affecting Melinda and Demetrius. Melinda speculates Donovan "changed" after Damian's birth, further burdening Damian with guilt.

His friendships include loyal followers Emile and Ewen, though he periodically shows irritation toward them. His dynamic with Anya is central; he nicknames her "commoner" while she calls him "Sy-on Boy". He dismisses her confession of telepathy as fantasy. Damian occasionally engages in childish creativity, devising imaginary techniques like the "Paradise Fist" to cope with jealousy or practical methods like "Lightning Note-Taking" for studies.
