Description
Known as The Ear or Mimi, this undisclosed-name member of Askeladd's mercenary band possessed a pinched face, narrow eyes, a thin mustache, and a wrinkled chin. He typically wore a medium-colored head wrap, a short-sleeved coat over a long-sleeved tunic, boots, and added a cloak in winter. Consistently soft-spoken and taciturn, he spoke only to relay vital information or obey commands.
His defining skill was exceptional auditory perception. Pressing his ear to the ground allowed him to detect distant sounds, distinguishing human from animal movement, estimating troop numbers, marching speeds, and proximity. This ability had limitations: it failed against stationary ambushers, and snowfall significantly dampened sound, reducing effectiveness. He fought competently with axe and shield and assessed military movements.
Though his full history with the band wasn't detailed, the group implicitly trusted his hearing, halting all activity for silence when he concentrated. His significant actions occurred late 1013 to early 1014. In November 1013 at the River Severn, he detected Thorkell's forces closing, first estimating a two-day gap, then correcting to under a day's march with about 500 mounted men, also identifying mounted scouts. Days later at Severn Roman ruins, he alerted the band to Thorkell's imminent arrival moments before Gratianus ferried them across.
Marching toward Brycheiniog, he detected hidden warriors ahead. When those warriors ambushed with arrows, his inability to warn was due to their lack of movement. In December 1013, stationed in a captured village, he monitored the outskirts from a tree to eliminate patrols, informing Askeladd and Bjorn that snowfall muffled sounds and limited his range. Later, urinating in a field with them, he detected approaching armed farmers attempting to flank the village from the east, though unable to estimate numbers. That night, he alerted the band to Thorkell's midnight advance, prompting retreat.
In January 1014 during the Severn bridge crossing, he assured Askeladd there was sufficient time to dismantle it. Immediately after destruction, he detected Thorkell's arrival as spear glints became visible on the opposite hill. His ultimate fate regarding potential participation in the mutiny against Askeladd was ambiguous. However, Thorkell's men later used his decapitated head for archery practice, and Atli recognized his remains among the fallen.
He appeared in manga chapters 23, 25, 29-32, 37, 42, 54 and anime episodes 5, 6, 10, 11, 14-16, with his corpse or flashback appearances noted in some installments.
