Captain Ivanov commands the deep space salvage freighter Corona. When a distress signal interrupts the crew's planned homeward voyage, he overrides personal reservations to investigate, fearing repercussions of inaction. He dispatches engineers Heintz and Miguel to inspect the mysterious signal-emitting station.

Prioritizing operational safety, Ivanov monitors events from the Corona as the station unleashes a powerful magnetic field. The escalating force threatens to crush the freighter against the structure, compelling him to authorize extreme countermeasures.

With destruction imminent, Ivanov orders crew members Aoshima and Ivanov to fire the ship's energy cannon at the station—a final attempt to neutralize the threat and recover Heintz. The blast damages the station but fails to save the Corona; the freighter disintegrates and merges with the station's expanding debris field. Ivanov perishes with his vessel.
