Description
Thorfinn was born in Iceland in 996 to Thors Snorresson, a former Jomsviking warrior, and Helga, daughter of Jomsviking chief Sigvaldi. He grew up unaware of his father's violent past in an isolated, peaceful environment. As a child, he listened with fascination to explorer Leif Ericson's adventure stories, particularly those about a distant land called Vinland. His father's philosophy that "you have no enemies" profoundly shaped his worldview, though he initially romanticized warrior culture through childhood mock battles.

His life changed irrevocably when he stowed away on his father's ship. He witnessed Thors surrender to and be killed by the mercenary Askeladd's forces after a duel, sacrificing himself to save Thorfinn. This event ignited a relentless pursuit of vengeance, leading Thorfinn to join Askeladd's band for 11 years. During this time, he became a skilled but emotionally numb warrior, completing dangerous missions to earn dueling opportunities against Askeladd. His combat style relied on agility and dual-wielded daggers, one being an ancestral blade from his father. He also demonstrated proficiency with throwing knives. However, his hot temper and impulsiveness frequently undermined his efforts, often exploited by Askeladd during their duels. Thorfinn grew detached, showing indifference to the band's atrocities against civilians while remaining solely fixated on revenge.

Askeladd's death at Prince Canute's hands shattered Thorfinn's purpose. After instinctively attacking Canute, he was enslaved on Ketil's farm in Denmark as punishment. Emotionally hollow and plagued by nightmares of his victims, he existed without direction until meeting Einar, an enslaved Englishman. Their friendship and shared labor clearing land fostered Thorfinn's gradual emotional recovery. Influenced by Einar's resilience, Ketil's father Sverkel, and the farm's bodyguard Snake, he confronted his past atrocities and embraced his father's pacifist ideals. This transformation solidified after the tragic death of Arnheid, Ketil's concubine, whom Thorfinn and Einar failed to protect from violence. He vowed to create a peaceful society free from slavery and warfare in Vinland.

Regaining freedom, Thorfinn traveled with Einar and Leif to gather resources. He reunited briefly with his family in Iceland before embarking on expeditions. He married Gudrid, adopting the orphaned Karli, and formed a crew including the hunter Hild, who initially sought vengeance against him for killing her father during his mercenary days. Thorfinn accepted her hatred, demonstrating his commitment to non-violence and atonement. His physical appearance evolved, marked by increasing facial scars from confrontations where he refused to wield weapons, such as injuries inflicted by Snake and Garm. He slicked back his previously messy hair.

Reaching Vinland, Thorfinn established the settlement of Arnheid Village, focusing on agriculture and peaceful coexistence. He maintained his pacifist stance despite escalating tensions with the indigenous Mi'kmaq people over resources and disease spread by the settlers. Hild eventually forgave him, recognizing his genuine redemption. However, facing potential war and recognizing the settlement's unintended consequences, he considered abandoning Vinland to prevent further conflict, embodying his belief that "a true warrior needs no sword."
