Description
Lotte Jansson, a Finnish witch, hails from a family running a magic apothecary. Their hereditary ability to communicate with spirits inhabiting old objects underpins their magical furniture business and defines her own magical specialization. Seeking a license for magic tools, she enrolls at Luna Nova Magical Academy.

She possesses short, bright orange hair held by a navy-blue headband, turquoise blue eyes, pale skin dotted with freckles across her cheeks and nasal bridge, and semi-rimless eyeglasses with mauve frames. Her standard Luna Nova uniform is personalized with a red belt and a red band on her hat.

Naturally shy, calm, and kind-hearted, Lotte often acts as the voice of reason for her impulsive roommate, Akko. She demonstrates deep loyalty to her friends, rarely expressing anger. A notable exception occurred when Akko damaged her ancestral song's sheet music, causing Lotte to become cold and distant until a handmade gift facilitated reconciliation. Despite her usual timidity, she exhibits fierce determination in critical moments, defending Akko against peers or summoning spirits within a sunken pirate ship to rescue her from a giant fish. She shares an avid fandom for the novel series *Nightfall* with classmates Barbara Parker and Samantha Badcock.

Her magic centers on Communication Magic, invoking and contacting spirits or fairies within objects. Eschewing traditional methods, she primarily uses songs taught by her grandmother. These songs calm hostile fairies and synchronize with spirits to access advanced spells, enabling her to manipulate plants, conjure healing fields, and generate purifying fields that damage enemies or induce sleep. She also commands standard witchcraft skills like Metamorphosis Magic for transformation and Flight Magic via broom. Her equipment includes a magic wand, a crystal ball for communication and accessing the magic equivalent of the internet, and a skull lantern housing her familiar, a will-o'-wisp named Will-o'-chan.

Development across media reveals moments of courage beyond her initial portrayal: overcoming a fear of fish to save Akko and volunteering for a perilous mission into a spiritual realm. Early concepts proposed additional abilities like absorbing spirit power, spirit-controlled weapons, or channeling a Celtic warrior's soul through a ceremonial sword, though these were not implemented in final narratives.

Trivia notes include her carrying Finnish items such as salmiakki licorice and Fazer chocolate, and a bag featuring the "Unikko" print by Marimekko. The sheet music for her spirit song incorporates lyrics from Björk's "Crying." A discrepancy exists between her depicted fear of fish in the Teri Terio manga and its absence in the anime episode "Orange Submariner."
