Description
Hermann van Daan, a Jewish man in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, shares a concealed Amsterdam annex with his family and the Frank family. A German émigré turned Amsterdam spice merchant, he partners with Otto Frank in the pectin trade, his pragmatism sharpened by the claustrophobic tensions of confinement. His marriage to Petronella van Daan simmers with public disputes, while their son Peter navigates the strained dynamics. Hermann’s calculated focus on survival fuels clashes over rationed supplies, with accusations of hoarding and self-interest fracturing the group’s fragile unity.
A relentless smoker, he guards his dwindling cigarette stash with possessive resolve, prioritizing personal comforts amid scarcity—a habit others resent as reckless indulgence. Fellow occupants perceive his stubbornness and guarded demeanor as survivalist reflexes, hardened by two years of fear and eroding morale. Captured in 1944, he faces deportation to Auschwitz, where he perishes under undocumented circumstances.
Interactions in the annex paint a man both abrasive and achingly human: a pragmatist clinging to routine, a husband fraying under shared despair, a father insulated by necessity. His defiance of communal expectations underscores not malice but the raw instinct to endure, reflecting the unyielding weight of living as prey.
