Jirō Sakagami

Description
Jiro Sakagami was a Japanese comedian, actor, and singer whose career spanned from the 1960s until the late 2000s. While he was primarily known for his extensive live-action performances, he contributed to several notable anime projects as a voice actor.

Sakagami was born on April 16, 1934, in Kagoshima Prefecture. He began his entertainment career after winning an NHK singing contest at the age of 19, moving to Tokyo with aspirations of becoming a singer. He eventually trained as a comedian in the Asakusa district, where he met Kinichi Hagimoto. In 1966, the pair formed the popular comedy duo Konto 55-gou, which achieved national fame through numerous television programs. Sakagami also pursued a parallel career as a dramatic actor, appearing in films such as Nagisa Oshima's internationally recognized Taboo (Gohatto) in 1999.

His voice acting work is documented in several films. One of his earliest anime voice roles was providing the voice of the Chinese Wiseman in the 1979 Japanese version of the stop-motion animated film Nutcracker Fantasy. In 1982, he appeared in the animated television film I Am a Cat, an adaptation of the classic Japanese novel by Natsume Soseki, where he voiced the character Kushami Chinno. Over a decade later, in 1995, Sakagami took on the role of Hermann van Daan (also credited as Mr. Hans Van Dann) in the feature-length anime The Diary of Anne Frank, a production directed by Akinori Nagaoka based on the real-life diary.

Throughout his life, Sakagami demonstrated resilience in his career. He suffered a stroke in September 2003 but underwent rehabilitation and successfully returned to the stage in 2004. He continued to perform until his health declined again in 2010. Jiro Sakagami died of a stroke on March 10, 2011, at a hospital in Tochigi Prefecture. His anime voice roles, though limited in number, remain a part of his broad and varied legacy in Japanese entertainment.
