Description
Donkey Kong serves as a major character in the animated film, portrayed as an anthropomorphic gorilla. He is the son of Cranky Kong and heir to the Jungle Kingdom throne. His design features brown fur with a tan face, chest, hands, and feet, plus a distinctive dark brown patch encircling his eyes. He consistently wears a red necktie emblazoned with yellow "DK" initials. Utilizing a Fire Flower transforms his fur to red with a white head tuft and sleeves, while his tie shifts to white with red text. This visual presentation marks a redesign from prior video games, incorporating a more comical personality and elements recalling the original 1981 character while retaining core attributes like the tie.

Initially arrogant and egotistical, he showboats during an arena battle and dismisses power-ups. He belittles his opponent, reacts pettily to defeat by insisting he allowed the victory and expressing animosity. Underlying this behavior is insecurity about paternal approval; he confesses dissatisfaction that Cranky Kong views him as unserious and desires recognition beyond being seen as just someone who smashes things. This vulnerability surfaces inside a creature's digestive system, where he bonds with another character over shared paternal disapproval before reverting to bickering.

His narrative starts in the Jungle Kingdom arena, battling Mario under Cranky Kong's stipulation for an alliance. After initial dominance, he loses when Mario uses a Cat Suit. Following defeat, he joins the mission against Bowser. His kart is destroyed in an ambush, causing him and Mario to plummet into the ocean. Nearly drowning and saved by Mario, both are swallowed by a Maw-Ray. Their shared confinement facilitates the mutual vulnerability about paternal relationships, though tensions resurface. They escape using a rocket from the damaged kart, arriving at Bowser's fortress. There, he participates in freeing prisoners and combating Bowser's forces. Transported to Brooklyn during the climax, he joins the fight against Bowser, protecting Mario from a fatal attack before Bowser's defeat.

He possesses immense physical strength, lifting and throwing humans effortlessly and handling heavy barrels. His durability allows him to withstand significant punishment with minimal injury, surviving attacks from Cat Mario and Bowser while only losing consciousness. Additional attributes include high stamina for prolonged combat, notable agility despite his size, and proficient kart driving skills demonstrated on Rainbow Road. As Jungle Kingdom's champion fighter, he exhibits expert combatant status and strategic intelligence. Using the Fire Flower grants him the ability to generate and throw fireballs.

Family relationships are simplified compared to broader franchise lore. Cranky Kong is explicitly his father and ruler of the Jungle Kingdom, diverging from video game canon where Cranky is typically the grandfather. This paternal relationship drives his motivation for validation. Other Kong family members appear briefly in crowd scenes or the kart sequence: Diddy Kong (his nephew), Dixie Kong (Diddy's girlfriend), Chunky Kong (Dixie's cousin), Kiddy Kong (Chunky's younger brother), and Funky Kong (a non-related friend). These are cameos without narrative development or dialogue.

His character arc progresses from arrogant antagonist to cooperative ally. The initial rivalry with Mario evolves through shared adversity – the near-drowning and Maw-Ray escape – fostering mutual respect. This culminates in him saving Mario from Bowser and participating in the group hug celebration. The journey resolves his insecurity about being perceived as merely a "smash monkey," demonstrating broader capabilities through strategic combat contributions and protective actions.
