Description
Cian Reikado was one of three teenage friends in a future society dominated by pervasive health monitoring and social control. As adolescents, Cian, Tuan Kirie, and Miach Mihie formed a pact to starve themselves to death, rebelling against a world they saw as oppressive. They targeted the "WatchMe" nanotechnology and societal structures that erased personal autonomy, bodily freedom, and authentic emotional experience. During their joint suicide attempt, Miach succeeded in dying, while Cian survived after alerting authorities and backing out, leading to medical intervention for herself and Tuan.
Thirteen years later, Cian had become an adult who outwardly embraced the conformist ideals she once rejected, contrasting sharply with Tuan's continued resistance. She carried persistent guilt over her survival and perceived betrayal of the pact, especially regarding Miach's death. Cian internalized a sense of failure in their shared act of defiance, viewing herself as a traitor to their ideals. This unresolved trauma compounded her emotional struggles.
A reunion with Tuan triggered a critical turning point. During a meal together, Cian abruptly committed suicide, witnessed by Tuan. This act occurred amidst a global wave of unexplained suicides linked to a terrorist plot manipulating consciousness through the WatchMe system. Her death became a catalyst for Tuan’s investigation into the deeper threats undermining their society.
Characterized as quieter and more emotionally vulnerable than Miach or Tuan, Cian often followed the lead of her stronger-willed friends, particularly Miach, who initiated the pact. Her later conformity functioned as a coping mechanism for the guilt and trauma stemming from their failed rebellion and Miach’s death. This psychological burden underscored her ultimate decision to end her life.
