Description
Tamaki Kitakōji is a close friend of protagonist Benio Hanamura, residing together in Tokyo during the Taishō era—a time of shifting social norms and Western influences. Contrasting Benio’s tomboyish nature with her traditionally feminine demeanor, Tamaki equally shares progressive stances on women’s independence and opposition to arranged marriages. She actively participates in Japan’s burgeoning feminist movement, notably citing the inaugural issue of *Seitō* magazine: *"In the beginning, woman was the sun. Now she is the moon. We must become a new woman,"* reflecting her dedication to self-determination.

Initially harboring romantic feelings for Shinobu Ijuin, a half-Japanese army lieutenant, Tamaki faces emotional turmoil when Benio’s family arranges her engagement to Shinobu. This dynamic fuels Benio’s early resistance to the match. As the narrative unfolds, Tamaki evolves beyond these conflicts, developing a romance with Shingo Onijima—Shinobu’s subordinate recently returned from Siberia. This relationship prompts her to follow Onijima to Manchuria, a decision embodying her belief in prioritizing personal conviction over societal conformity.

Serving as both foil and complement to Benio, Tamaki represents an alternate facet of Taishō-era modern womanhood. Where Benio rebels through physical pursuits like kendo and bold fashion, Tamaki channels her feminism through intellectual engagement while navigating complex emotional loyalties. Her journey concludes with a resolution that mirrors her internal growth and steadfast commitment to autonomous choice.
