Description
Kunio Hikita is a 78-year-old Japanese man with grey hair and grey eyes. He owned and operated a suburban supermarket, living in the house behind it. In his youth, he was a national champion in kyudo. When catastrophic earthquakes struck Japan, Hikita reacted with hostility to survivors seeking refuge in his store, firing warning arrows. One arrow accidentally struck a child, Go Mutoh, though it was stopped by the boy's handheld game console. Following this incident, Hikita allowed the Mutoh family and their companions shelter during a storm. He repaired the damaged game console, claiming an ability to fix anything man-made.

After another earthquake collapsed his store and home into the sea, Hikita escaped with the survivors using his truck. Witnessing the destruction triggered memories of his 40 years there with his deceased wife. The group traveled towards Shan City. During the journey, Hikita displayed morphine withdrawal symptoms. He later acquired more morphine and indicated a specific reason for going to Shan City.

At Shan City, Hikita struggled intensely with the multicultural community, clashing with his xenophobic views. He openly expressed disdain for non-Japanese people, resisted integration, and slept in his truck. His worsening morphine addiction led to aggression. He attacked community guards and attempted to kidnap a boy, Daichi, mistaking him for his missing grandson. This caused a hallucination-induced truck crash. Subsequently, Kanae Murota imprisoned him, where his withdrawal-induced aggression intensified.

Aided with morphine and freed during another major earthquake, Hikita insisted on rescuing Daichi. Upon reaching the boy's room, he discovered Daichi had died. Hikita confessed he knew Daichi wasn't his actual grandson, revealing his real granddaughter, Mana, had gone missing in a landslide before Shan City. His journey there was driven by a desperate hope to find her. He asked Kanae if she could communicate with Mana's spirit, receiving a final message urging him to quit smoking.

During Shan City's collapse, Hikita assisted the Mutoh family's escape by providing a car and using his archery skills against pursuing guards. He chose to remain behind in the collapsing structure.
