Description
Born in Musashi Province (modern Tokyo), Shinpachi Nagakura trained at the Shieikan dojo, forging a close bond with Toshizou Hijikata. His reckless nature earned him the nickname "Gamushin." He joined the Shinsengumi alongside Hijikata and Kondou Isami as a prominent member. Following the Shinsengumi's scattering at the Battle of Toba-Fushimi (Keiou 4), Nagakura refused to regroup in Edo due to his dislike of Kondou, leading to a strained parting with Hijikata.

Leaving the Shinsengumi, Nagakura became the swordsmanship instructor for the guards at Kabato Prison. He held annual training sessions, earning the authorities' trust and gaining significant influence, enabling him to make requests of the staff. Years later, departing the prison after training, he encountered a prisoner line and recognized Hijikata, who called him "Gamushin." Nagakura was shocked, unaware of Hijikata's imprisonment.

Nagakura confronted Warden Shirosuke Inudou, demanding to know why he was never informed. Inudou expressed personal hatred for Hijikata over his brother's death and denied access. After a physical altercation, guards ejected Nagakura, but the chief guard later permitted a private conversation. They reminisced, with Hijikata implying he still saw Nagakura as a reckless fool.

In Otaru, Hijikata and Tatsuma Ushiyama sought Nagakura's help. He provided them a base, capital, and foreign firearms. Despite this support, he declined to join Hijikata's mission to revive the Shinsengumi, citing his age and stating, "If a man does not die when he is meant to, what awaits him is a shame worse than death." He speculated Hijikata might be seeking a place to die, which Hijikata denied.

Nagakura later traveled with Hijikata's group, including Kano Ienaga, Kiroranke, and Shiraishi. During the Con Artists Arc in Yubari, they encountered Sugimoto's group. Nagakura attempted to negotiate for the tattooed skins Sugimoto possessed, urging him to abandon the hunt for a quiet life, but Sugimoto refused. When the groups temporarily allied, Ienaga suggested consulting counterfeit artist Chouan Kumagishi. Nagakura used his Kabato Prison connections to arrange a meeting, but Warden Matasuke Ooshima informed them Kumagishi had died during an escape attempt, forcing them to rely on Shiraishi’s expertise.

Needing access to Kumagishi’s records, Nagakura accompanied Ienaga back to Kabato Prison to inquire, reinforcing his ongoing relationship with the institution. After Shiraishi was captured by the 7th Division, Nagakura gathered intelligence on soldier movements from townsfolk and expressed skepticism about Shiraishi’s quick escape. He remained with the group planning their next moves, including a potential rescue.

Traveling to Kushiro with Hijikata and Ushiyama during the gold hunt, they sought information about an item belonging to tattooed convict Shinzou Doi, enlisting Ainu hunter Kirawus. Nagakura observed Kirawus’s detailed wildlife knowledge aiding their search.

Nagakura displayed enduring loyalty to Hijikata despite past conflicts, rooted in their shared history. His younger self was characterized by recklessness and troublemaking, particularly with women, often requiring Hijikata’s intervention with Kondou. As an older man, he maintained pragmatism, prioritizing survival over idealism while honoring his bonds. His highly respected swordsmanship skills were acknowledged as the best in the Shinsengumi during his prime.
