Yuta Hibiki partners with the interdimensional entity Gridman. He is a Repli-Compoid, a human-like being within the simulated city of Tsutsujidai, created by Akane Shinjo using her Venora series software in the Computer World. His inherent resistance to complete programming control allowed Gridman to choose him as a host. During an initial clash between Gridman and Alexis・Kerib, Gridman fractured. One fragment unintentionally possessed Yuta, suppressing his original consciousness and creating the perception of amnesia. Influenced by Yuta's dormant psyche, this fragment believed itself to be the genuine Yuta Hibiki, adopting his personality and feelings, particularly his affection for classmate Rikka Takarada.
Yuta initially awakened on Rikka's couch with no memories. Rikka and their friend Sho Utsumi helped him reintegrate into daily life. When Ghoulghilas attacked, Yuta reconnected with Gridman, merging to fight threats. This merging process, called Access Flash, utilized a device called the Primal Acceptor worn on his left wrist, often activated near the Junk computer in Rikka's family shop. Throughout subsequent battles against monsters created by Akane under Alexis・Kerib's influence, Yuta fought with dedication to protect his friends and city, prioritizing this mission despite fear and hesitation, especially when confronting the sentient monster Anti.
His relationships drove significant development. His feelings for Rikka caused jealousy and motivated awkward attempts to confess. Complicated dynamics existed with Akane, recognizing her as both classmate and creator. He consistently sought to understand and save her from manipulation, rejecting her offers to join her. A critical turning point occurred when Akane stabbed him with a cutter, leading to hospitalization and a coma. During this coma, a profound revelation unfolded: Yuta never truly had amnesia. His lack of memories stemmed from being a vessel for Gridman's fragment, with the original Yuta consciousness dormant. The Neon Genesis Junior High Students repaired the Junk computer based on this realization, enabling his awakening.
Following this, Yuta actively rejoined the fight. He regrouped with Anti, now an ally named Gridknight, and directed efforts to locate Rikka and Utsumi during the final confrontation. Performing a final Access Flash alongside Anti and the Neon Genesis Junior High Students, he facilitated Gridman's return to full power. This alliance succeeded in healing Akane's emotional wounds while defeating Alexis・Kerib. Gridman then departed, allowing the original, fully conscious Yuta Hibiki to awaken in the Junk shop as his parents returned. Physically, he has red hair, blue eyes which turned and remained yellow like Gridman's after his coma awakening, stands approximately 160 cm tall, weighs 52 kg, and typically wears a school uniform: a white shirt, red tie, dark gray sleeveless sweater, black pants, and distinctive red-and-white sneakers with blue oval details.
Later, in the GRIDMAN UNIVERSE movie, his established personality traits remained consistent with his original self – caring, protective, and slightly more emotionally expressive. He enjoyed drama shows and experienced significant insecurity regarding his romantic feelings for Rikka, often assuming the worst outcomes. He also harbored concerns about his effectiveness in battle compared to his possessed self's experience. Crucially, he understood and forgave Gridman for the unintentional possession, acknowledging the circumstances of their first encounter. He willingly partnered with Gridman again to face new threats. His abilities stem from his Repli-Compoid nature and connection to Gridman, including perceiving Akane's hidden Venoras, passively sharing this perception with Rikka and Utsumi post-battle, and performing the Access Flash transformation, though duration and scale could be constrained by the Junk computer's processing limits.
