TV-Series
Description
Mahiru Shirota is the protagonist of Servamp, a first-year high school student who prefers simple things and dislikes complicated situations. He is fifteen years old at the beginning of the story, later turning sixteen, and stands at 165 centimeters tall. Mahiru has short, light brown hair that frames his face and large brown eyes, and his birthday is July 7th. He typically wears a brown shirt with a white collar beneath an orange jacket with slightly rolled sleeves, a red tie, beige pants that end just below his knees, and white and orange sneakers. Orange is his favorite color, and he generally opts for comfortable clothing.
Mahiru lost his mother, Akira Shirota, at a very young age when she was hit by a truck, and his father is not mentioned or present in his life. With no close family members available to care for him, his uncle, Toru Shirota, took him in and raised him. However, Toru was frequently away from home due to work obligations, leaving Mahiru to grow up largely alone and take care of himself. This upbringing forced him to teach himself basic household skills such as cooking, cleaning, and sewing, talents that later extend into his school life where he uses them for class projects.
In terms of personality, Mahiru is open-minded and independent, unafraid to show his true feelings or thoughts and capable of being critical of others when necessary. He behaves quite responsibly due to his preference for simplicity over difficulty and has a tendency to depend on himself rather than turning to others for help, most likely because he never felt the need to rely on anyone else before. Mahiru has a small amount of patience and typically raises his voice when irritated or annoyed, often taking on the role of a mother hen because he acts more mature than his friends or classmates. Despite his short temper, he knows how to use his words wisely for encouragement and almost always understands exactly what to say and what to avoid saying. Once he sets his eyes on a goal, he refuses to change his mind and does everything in his power to achieve that goal.
Mahiru's role in the story begins when he finds a stray black cat on his way home from school and decides to take it in, naming it Kuro. He is surprised to discover that the cat is actually Sleepy Ash, a Servamp representing the sin of Sloth and one of seven vampire siblings. By giving Kuro his name in his human form and placing a collar on him, Mahiru forms a temporary contract that becomes finalized when Kuro drinks his blood, making Mahiru an Eve and Kuro his Servamp. This contract draws him into a conflict with Tsubaki, a vampire who claims to be the eighth Servamp of Melancholy and intends to wage war against the seven Servamps, prompting Mahiru to decide to gather the seven Servamps to fight together against Tsubaki and his group.
Regarding his relationships, the most significant is with Kuro, Sleepy Ash. Initially, Mahiru finds Kuro lazy and messy, frequently yelling at him for leaving crumbs on the floor and even hitting him with a broom when they first met. Over time, however, they grow closer, with Mahiru making note of Kuro's preferences such as his fondness for ramen and buying him packets of ramen and other food. After each fight, Mahiru's first concern is whether Kuro is okay, and when asked if he ever regretted finding him, Mahiru responds that he could never regret it. He rejects any suggestion of breaking their bond, insisting that he wants to be Kuro's equal partner and that only the two of them should decide their fates together. Mahiru trusts Kuro with his life and wants to become great friends with him.
Mahiru also has a complex friendship with Sakuya, who appears to be a childhood friend but is actually a vampire and one of Tsubaki's servants who created false memories. When Sakuya reveals the truth and asks Mahiru to kill him to escape his pain, Mahiru refuses and insists on saving him instead. Even after learning the truth and fighting against him, Mahiru still considers Sakuya a friend and tells him that he is not alone. He maintains the black and white striped wristband that Sakuya gave him.
His relationship with Misono Alicein begins antagonistically when Misono tries to take Kuro away from him, but after Mahiru proves himself, Misono agrees to help with Tsubaki. Though Misono is hesitant to become friends, Mahiru is enthusiastic, and they exchange phone numbers and become good friends despite Misono's grumpy personality. Mahiru worries about Misono whenever he passes out from exhaustion and helps him in various situations. Mikuni Alicein serves as a mentor to Mahiru, helping him train his powers to work effectively with Kuro, though Mahiru's trust in Mikuni wavers after Misono suggests that Mikuni cannot be trusted.
In terms of notable abilities, Mahiru possesses a Lead, a conjured tool for Eves, which takes the form of a broomstick. He can summon this broom at any time and use it in various situations, such as creating a whirlwind that breaks through a concrete ceiling by spinning himself and the broom together, and he can also fly using it. There is an irony noted in the fact that his Lead is a broom, as it represents his personality and was the first thing he used to hit Kuro when they met. He lacks training and extensive knowledge about his Lead initially, though it later changes form into a spear, giving him more physical prowess. Through his bond with Kuro, when Kuro drinks his blood, both he and his Servamp appear to become more powerful. His catchphrase reflects his straightforward attitude: thinking simply, it has to be him.
Throughout the story, Mahiru shows notable development as he learns to work alongside Kuro as an equal partner rather than simply as a master and servant. He becomes more willing to face difficult situations and confront dangerous enemies, all while maintaining his core desire to protect his friends and do what he believes is right. His determination to save rather than destroy, even when facing enemies like Sakuya who have betrayed him, demonstrates his growth into a compassionate and principled individual.
