Description
Mahiru Shirota, a first-year high school student, values simplicity and responsibility. Orphaned young after his mother's death with no known father, he was raised by his busy uncle, Toru Shirota. This upbringing fostered self-reliance, leading Mahiru to master household chores like cooking, cleaning, and sewing. His independence shaped a personality favoring straightforward solutions and practical action, often expressed through his catchphrase: "Thinking simply, it's got to be me!"

He possesses light brown hair, brown eyes, and stands 1.65 meters tall. Mahiru typically wears comfortable clothing, frequently incorporating orange, such as a jacket over a brown shirt, beige knee-length pants, and a red tie. He occasionally sports a black-and-white wristband gifted by his friend Sakuya.

His life takes an irreversible turn when he rescues a heat-exhausted black cat, later revealed as the Servamp of Sloth, Sleepy Ash (whom Mahiru names "Kuro"). Accidental events—naming the cat, attaching a bell to its collar, and later verbally calling it "Kuro"—initiate a temporary contract. This bond becomes permanent when Mahiru offers his blood to Kuro during an attack by the vampire Berkia, transforming Mahiru into an "Eve" (master) and unlocking Kuro's enhanced combat abilities. The contract also grants Mahiru a weapon called a "Lead," which initially manifests as a broom, reflecting his pragmatic nature and household skills. This Lead later evolves into a spear, symbolizing his growing resolve.

Mahiru's personality blends open-mindedness with low patience, often expressing irritation vocally. His maturity and protective instincts lead him to assume a "mother hen" role among peers. He holds strong moral convictions, refusing to let Kuro kill enemies like Berkia and insisting on shouldering his responsibilities as an Eve. While frequently frustrated by Kuro’s laziness, he possesses a distinct ability to articulate encouragement.

His development centers on confronting the eighth Servamp, Tsubaki, who instigates conflict among vampires. Mahiru forms alliances with other Eves, notably Misono Alicein (Eve of the Servamp of Lust, Snow Lily). During a critical battle against Sakuya—revealed as Tsubaki’s subordinate—Mahiru hesitates to fight his friend, causing Kuro’s powers to spiral out of control. This forces Mahiru to reconcile his pacifism with the necessity of combat, solidifying his resolve to protect others despite personal turmoil.

In the film *Alice in the Garden*, Mahiru investigates unnatural snowfall linked to vampire activity. He rallies allies to the Alicein Mansion, where he challenges Misono’s father over restricting Misono’s autonomy. When Lily’s contract item is destroyed, triggering a berserk state that engulfs Misono, Mahiru enters Lily’s inner world. There, he supports Misono through traumatic family revelations, reinforcing their bond. Mahiru and Kuro ultimately defeat psychic manifestations of Misono’s half-brother, Mikuni, stabilizing Lily and Misono’s contract. This ordeal underscores Mahiru’s role as an emotional anchor and his unwavering commitment to collective action against threats.

Mahiru’s relationships evolve throughout his journey: his dynamic with Kuro shifts from mutual annoyance to deep interdependence, while his alliance with Misono transitions from initial hostility to mutual respect. His confrontation with Sakuya—a friend manipulated by Tsubaki—highlights his struggle to balance loyalty with the harsh realities of their conflict, ultimately strengthening his conviction to end battles without sacrificing compassion.
