Description
Osushi-chan is a small, white puppy who appears in Burn the Witch as the constant companion of the student Balgo Parks. Balgo found the dog on the street roughly two months before the main events of the story and has cared for him without separation ever since, keeping the puppy close at all times. In ordinary daily life Osushi-chan acts like a gentle, docile, and affectionate puppy, and Balgo dotes on him to an exaggerated degree, praising him with claims such as winning the Nobel cuteness award for ten consecutive years and declaring that his cuteness alone could build a house.
Beneath this harmless appearance, Osushi-chan is actually a Disguiser, a type of dragon that impersonates other creatures by assuming their form, which is why he is also described as a dragon dog. His true nature becomes visible through specific triggers: whenever Balgo sneezes, laughs too hard, imitates Osushi-chan's cry, or faces genuine danger, the creature's dragon wings suddenly emerge. The transformation can be undone by holding and petting him, which calms him down and returns him to his usual puppy form.
When his dragon nature fully reveals itself, Osushi-chan takes the shape of a large black dragon with a lighter underbelly, four thick legs, two enormous wings, heavy scales, and many sharp teeth. In this form he is capable of flight and can carry Balgo through the air, and his actions remain centered on protecting his owner. Because he belongs to a classification of dragon known as a Dark Dragon, Osushi-chan possesses a higher level of intelligence. Through living alongside Balgo and absorbing his negative emotions, he has developed a limited ability to speak human language, although he only ever utters a single inappropriate request directed toward the witch Noel Niihashi and does not appear to understand the meaning of what he says.
