Description
Yugiri is a zombie idol in Franchouchou, resurrected in the modern era after originating in 19th-century Japan during the Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration. Born on November 23, 1863, her human life ended via beheading on December 28, 1882, at age 19. She accepted execution as a scapegoat for fatalities resulting from organizing a rebellion to restore Saga's prefecture status, leaving a distinct neck scar on her undead form.
Previously, she worked as a high-ranking oiran in Tokyo, renowned for her entertainment skills but deemed a financial burden due to her exclusivity. A senior government official purchased her freedom, leading her to Saga. There, she formed a meaningful bond with Kiichi Momozaki, who gifted her a red comb. During the Saga Incident, she intervened to save Kiichi from assassination by government mole Shojiro Ito, using a concealed sword within her shamisen to defeat him in a duel. She faced death with composure, smiling farewell. Before capture, she arranged a letter informing necromancer Jofoku she had "escaped Saga," ensuring Kiichi could pursue Saga's restoration.
Resurrected over a century later, Yugiri adapts smoothly to modern society despite her Edo origins. She adopts a relaxed philosophy, stating confusion is unproductive and preferring to accept new experiences calmly, aiding her integration into contemporary idol activities. Her personality shows maternal warmth, emotional stability, and perceptiveness; she often acts as Franchouchou's unifying figure, offering guidance during conflicts and showing particular kindness toward Lily. She employs abrupt, supernaturally fast slaps to snap teammates out of depressive states, stemming from her no-nonsense approach to morale.
As a zombie, she exhibits blue-gray skin, glowing red eyes, high durability, and regenerative capabilities allowing reattachment of limbs. Her body absorbs chemicals like medicinal patches for muscle relaxation and converts electrical energy—such as lightning strikes—into luminescent displays or laser-like projections. She resists extreme forces like truck collisions and electrocution.
Her skills reflect her historical background: proficiency in traditional dance, shamisen performance, culinary arts, and pressure-point acupuncture. She demonstrates exceptional swordsmanship, leveraging agility and precision honed as an oiran. In group activities, she contributes acrobatic talents and historical wisdom, like effortlessly lighting fires using Edo-period methods. Post-resurrection, she works as a bartender at Snack Chinatsu Bar, interacting with modern clients like Police Officer A.
Yugiri deduces connections others overlook, such as producer Kotaro Tatsumi's past relationship with teammate Sakura Minamoto. She references historical events like the Sonno Joi movement when relevant and wields subtle influence over Kotaro, who avoids mistreating her likely due to Jofuku's oversight. Her keepsakes—Kiichi's comb and a group photo with Ito—serve as emotional anchors during stress.
Throughout Franchouchou's journey, her role evolves from participant to strategic supporter. She aids in early performances like the Saga Castle rap battle and Kashima Gatalympics, later helping resolve internal crises like Sakura's depression by slapping her into compliance before a critical concert. Her historical legacy resurfaces as she inspires Saga's revitalization through both past sacrifice and present artistic contributions.
In spin-off media, she appears in manga stories like the Yoshinogari Historical Park visit, modeling Yayoi-era clothing and participating in fire-making contests. She also engages in culinary-focused promotional events for Franchouchou.
