Description
Kim Pine, born October 1980 in North Bay, Northern Ontario, attended St. Joel's Catholic High School. She briefly dated Simon Lee before Scott Pilgrim intervened, leading to a relationship between Kim and Scott. She joined Scott's band Sonic & Knuckles with Lisa Miller, forming a friend group including Lauren Wood. Their relationship ended when Scott's family moved to Toronto. After high school, Kim attended Nipissing University before relocating to Toronto. There, she reconnected with Scott and Stephen Stills to form Sex Bob-omb, serving as its drummer and famously counting in performances with "WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB!!".

Kim worked as a clerk at No-Account Video alongside Hollie Hawkes. She temporarily moved in with Hollie, but this ended when Hollie had an affair with Kim's boyfriend, Jason Kim. This betrayal, coinciding with Sex Bob-omb finishing their demo, prompted Kim to move back to Northern Ontario to live with her parents. Scott visited her there, and she ambiguously accepted his apology for past behavior. The graphic novels' epilogue reveals she later returned to Toronto permanently.

Her personality is characterized by persistent sarcasm, cynicism, and outward pessimism, often directing sharp criticism toward Scott's decisions and lifestyle, stemming from past disappointments like Scott's abrupt high school departure and Jason Kim's infidelity. Despite this, she demonstrates underlying loyalty and care for close associates, particularly bandmates and Ramona Flowers. She forged a genuine friendship with Ramona based on mutual understanding and respect, offering support while respecting boundaries. Kim functions as a grounding force within Scott's narrative, frequently challenging his subjective recollections and prompting him to confront uncomfortable truths.

Kim's romantic history includes her high school relationship with Scott and the later relationship with Jason Kim. While intoxicated at a party, she kissed Knives Chau, a moment interpreted differently by others but not leading to a defined relationship. In the video game adaptation, one non-canonical ending depicts Kim and Knives becoming a couple. Her interactions with Roxie Richter in the anime series included a brief kiss that Kim described as having "no sparks".

In the film adaptation, Kim's resentment toward Scott is more pronounced, reflected in stern expressions and minimal blinking. She provides sarcastic commentary throughout the band's journey and signs them to Gideon Graves' label under duress. Her character arc culminates when Scott sincerely apologizes during his confrontation with Gideon, prompting Kim to genuinely smile for the first time in the film and rally the band against Gideon with "WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB AND WE'RE HERE TO WATCH SCOTT PILGRIM KICK YOUR TEETH IN!!!".

The anime series "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" features Kim prominently after Scott's disappearance following his fight with Matthew Patel. She attends Scott's funeral, offering Young Neil the resigned observation "nobody wins forever." She later assists Ramona Flowers in investigating Scott's disappearance, revealing details about her past relationship with Scott and his role in "saving" her from Simon Lee. During Ramona's fight with Roxie Richter within a film, Kim used a remote to rewind it, inadvertently causing Roxie to destroy the device. After Ramona and Roxie reconcile, Kim shares a brief kiss with Roxie but notes the lack of romantic chemistry. Kim continues supporting Ramona's investigation, attends the premiere of "Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Musical" to support Stephen Stills, and witnesses the final confrontation involving Scott and Ramona.

In the video game, Kim is a playable character with a moveset including punches, kicks, and special abilities like "Inferno Kick" and "Call Knives Chau," where Knives appears to kiss Kim, restoring health. Her exit animation references the Kirby game series, featuring a smiling star. The game features multiple non-canonical endings: dating Knives; dating Scott simultaneously with Knives and Envy Adams after Ramona leaves; Sex Bob-omb achieving fame and wealth; becoming enslaved by Nega Scott; and attending Knives and Scott's wedding.
