Yako once held the position of Kamome Academy's Number 2 supernatural, guardian of the concept "space." Her boundary manifests as the Misaki Stairs, specifically accessed from the fourth step. Within this domain, she commands spatial manipulation for instantaneous travel and wields puppeteering abilities, briefly animating constructed bodies.
Originally an Inari statue near a temple gate beside a schoolhouse, she formed an intense bond with the teacher Misaki. After witnessing his brutal death – torn apart on those very stairs – she became consumed by the need to recreate his physical form. This obsession drove her to manipulate students into crafting body parts, discarding flawed creations without remorse due to her limited grasp of human anatomy, actions fueled by overwhelming grief and denial of his loss.
Yako displays pronounced pride, insisting on being addressed by her proper name rather than titles like "Fox-san." She reacts to perceived vulnerability with aggression, biting or lashing out verbally. Yet, she reveals unexpected softness, particularly towards Kou Minamoto after learning of his struggles, permitting him to call her "Nee-san." She acknowledges Yugi Tsukasa's rumor alterations amplified, rather than created, her darker tendencies, describing them as latent aspects forcibly drawn out.
The spin-off *After-School Hanako-kun* reveals her daily life and quirks: she struggles with grooming in her true fox form, enjoys sweet-bean-jelly sandwiches, hunts Mokke, and develops affection for Nagisa, Nene Yashiro's homeroom teacher, due to his resemblance to Misaki. These stories show her engaging in leisurely activities, such as watching chaotic late-night programs like "After School Mokke" alongside Tsuchigomori and Hanako in the watchman's room.
Visually, her human form appears as a striking woman with long, braided beige hair adorned by a red-and-white ribbon resembling fox ears, bright green eyes, and traditional attire: a flower-patterned dark red kimono, white haori, gloves, socks, lime green obi, and brown geta sandals. Her true form is a small white fox wearing a red bib and bell earrings.
Her core narrative arc involves reconciling her destructive obsession with Misaki. After repeated failures to reconstruct him and confrontations with Hanako and his allies, she gradually abandons her violent methods, though her longing for Misaki endures. This shift includes moments of introspection, like admitting her wish for him to chastise her actions, reflecting regret and a complex understanding of his likely disapproval.
