Description
Renzo Shima grew up alongside Ryūji Suguro and Konekomaru Miwa at a Kyoto temple, forming childhood bonds. As the fifth and youngest Shima son, reduced responsibilities fostered his carefree, seemingly lazy demeanor. His eldest brother Takezō died shielding Renzo and Ryūji during the Blue Night, intensifying familial expectations. Despite this upbringing, Renzo rejected the temple’s legacy and the goal of defeating Satan, unlike Ryūji. Feeling overlooked—his mother prioritized inquiries about Ryūji and Konekomaru over him—he harbored resentment and a desire to escape predetermined paths, symbolized by dyeing his naturally black hair pink.

Initially a lighthearted Exwire at True Cross Academy, Renzo displayed a playful, perverted obsession with women—particularly Izumo Kamiki—and avoided seriousness in danger while fearing insects. Despite apparent laziness, he showed loyalty, accepting Rin Okumura upon learning Rin was Satan’s son, valuing character over heritage. Though aiming to become an Aria Meister, Konekomaru believed Renzo’s latent combat talents suited him better as a Knight. He wielded a K’rik staff to channel sacred flames against miasma and occasionally used basic Aria barrier charms.

Before enrolling, Renzo secretly joined the Illuminati as a spy, motivated by hatred of expectations and a desire to "throw everything away" due to perceived lack of control. Mephisto Pheles later recruited him as a double agent for the True Cross Order, a role Renzo embraced for freedom beyond tradition. His carefree persona aided espionage, allowing intelligence gathering without suspicion. Under Illuminati orders, he monitored Izumo for six months but restrained himself to avoid harming her or her familiars. During the True Cross Academy festival, he publicly betrayed the Order, incapacitating Izumo with a Flame-Tipped Vajra Spear and aiding her kidnapping—shattering friendships, especially with Ryūji and Konekomaru.

In the Shimane Illuminati arc, Renzo’s double agency was exposed to friends: he had reported to Mephisto all along. Despite claiming loyalty to the Order, distrust persisted. He joined Izumo’s rescue mission from the Illuminati’s Far East Laboratory, navigating conflicting loyalties. There, he revealed advanced combat capabilities—summoning the high-level demon Yamantaka at significant personal cost—hinting at deeper abilities and complex commitment. His relationship with Izumo became strained yet nuanced; initial closeness stemmed from surveillance, but genuine concern emerged. Interactions with Rin, whom he found "uncool" but inherently good, and childhood friends remained tense amid betrayals.
