Muichiro Tokito serves as the Mist Hashira within the Demon Slayer Corps. He is the younger twin brother of Yuichiro Tokito, both descendants of the Upper Rank One demon Kokushibo and the legendary swordsman Yoriichi Tsugikuni.
Tragedy struck Muichiro early. His mother died of bronchitis when he was ten; his father perished soon after, falling during a storm while seeking medicine for her. The orphaned twins lived isolated until Amane Ubuyashiki, wife of the Demon Slayer Corps leader, recruited them due to their lineage. Yuichiro refused, blaming their parents' selflessness for their fate. A year later, a demon attacked their home. Yuichiro sacrificed himself to save Muichiro. Consumed by rage, Muichiro killed the demon with makeshift weapons but witnessed his brother's slow death, causing severe trauma and complete memory loss. Amane later rescued him, and he joined the Corps.
Initially compassionate like his father and believing kindness would be returned, Muichiro adopted Yuichiro's cold, logic-driven demeanor after his amnesia. He became detached, forgetful, and dismissive, belittling swordsmith Kotetsu and prioritizing personal goals over communal duties. He retained deep respect for Corps leader Kagaya Ubuyashiki. Physically slight with long black hair fading to turquoise and vacant pale green eyes, his uniform featured loose, kimono-like sleeves and dark blue tabi socks, deliberately oversized to obscure his movements.
A combat prodigy, Muichiro achieved Hashira rank within two months of training, matching only Gyomei Himejima. His primary style is Mist Breathing, utilizing seven techniques. The seventh form, "Obscuring Clouds," is his original creation, using erratic speed changes to disorient opponents. During the Swordsmith Village Arc, he awakened his Demon Slayer Mark against Upper Rank Five Gyokko. The red mist-like patterns on his face and arms boosted his speed and strength, enabling him to decapitate Gyokko single-handedly, though its deactivation left him vulnerable to poison. Later, against Upper Rank One Kokushibo, he unlocked the Transparent World for kinetic vision predicting attacks and the Bright Red Nichirin Blade impeding demonic regeneration.
Encountering Tanjiro Kamado triggered Muichiro's development. Tanjiro's philosophy of mutual aid sparked fragmented memories, culminating in full recollection during the Gyokko battle. This restored his original kindness and emotional expressiveness. He saved Kotetsu from demons despite prior conflict, reconciled with swordsmith Kozo Kanamori, and forged bonds with fellow Demon Slayers. Regained memories unleashed "Omnipresent Rage"—suppressed fury over Yuichiro's death fueling his endurance. Against Kokushibo, he fought through limb amputation and torso bisection, using his final moments to dye his blade crimson red, enabling Kokushibo's defeat.
Muichiro succumbed to his injuries after that battle. His legacy includes being the sole Hashira to kill an Upper Rank demon alone and embodying the Tokito family's duality: "Muichiro" signifies limitless potential, while "Tokito" implies permeability, reflecting his mist-based techniques and transient existence.
