Kuroba Kaito, a high school student, secretly operates as the internationally notorious phantom thief Kaitō Kid—an identity inherited from his father, Kuroba Toichi. Toichi, a world-renowned magician who executed heists eight years earlier, died during a magic trick initially deemed accidental but later uncovered as murder by an organization pursuing the mythical immortality-granting gemstone "Pandora." Driven to expose his father's killers and dismantle the organization, Kaito adopts the Kaitō Kid persona to locate Pandora. He targets specific jewels, especially large gems under full moonlight, inspecting them for Pandora before returning them.
Kaitō Kid exhibits exceptional intelligence, meticulous planning, and extraordinary physical agility. His methodology relies on mastery of stage magic, escapology, disguise, and sleight of hand, augmented by custom gadgets like smoke bombs, card guns, gliders, decoys, and flawless disguise kits. During heists, he projects a flamboyant, theatrically playful demeanor with grand entrances, witty banter, and signature props including a white top hat, monocle, and cape—using showmanship as both distraction and identity. He adheres to a strict moral code: avoiding violence, returning non-Pandora gems, and protecting bystanders.
In civilian life, Kaito poses as an ordinary—though magically gifted and occasionally mischievous—high school student. He lives with his mother, who knows his secret, and attends school alongside Nakamori Aoko, his childhood friend and daughter of Inspector Nakamori Ginzo, Kid’s primary pursuer. Kaito meticulously conceals his double life from Aoko and classmates.
His development intensifies through rivalry with Kudō Shinichi, a brilliant high school detective operating as Edogawa Conan. Their confrontations involve intricate intellectual battles where Kid respects Shinichi’s deductive prowess while constantly innovating to outmaneuver him. The quest for Pandora and clashes with the murderous organization "Snake" escalate personal stakes, compelling Kid to balance his theatrical persona with the grave mission of avenging Toichi. He upholds his father’s principles of non-violence and life preservation.
Guided by responsibility to fulfill his father’s legacy and shield others—particularly Aoko—from the darkness he confronts, Kaito evolves from a truth-seeking teenager into a resolute adversary against hidden threats, all while sustaining the illusion of the gentleman thief.
