Shizuno Misaki is a central figure existing at the intersection of artificial intelligence and human experience. Initially appearing as a 17-year-old transfer student at Maihama Minami High School, she recruits Kyo Sogoru to pilot the Zegapain Altair mecha by agreeing to appear in his swim club's promotional video. Outwardly calm and mysterious, often perceived as fragile, she possesses significant inner resilience. She frequently refers to herself as the "witch who brings misfortune," believing her presence causes suffering to those close to her, a notion others like Arque Avenir reinforce by describing her as adept at creating gloomy atmospheres. Her background reveals she is not human but an artificial intelligence designated as version 4.31, uniquely capable of experiencing genuine emotions. Created as "Yehl" — a name referencing the Tlingit creation deity — she later receives the name "Shizuno Misaki" from a previous iteration of Kyo Sogoru, combining his mother's name ("Shizuno") and his sister's name ("Misaki"). This naming reflects her deep, unresolved connection to Kyo's past. Before appearing in the Maihama server, she shared a romantic relationship with the original Kyo, who sacrificed himself in battle, resulting in memory loss and emotional trauma that shaped her self-perceived cursed nature. As the "Wizard" (co-pilot) for the Zegapain Altair, she guides Kyo through battles against the Gards-orm aliens, leveraging her expertise in data salvage to rescue endangered individuals. Her role evolves after the death of Arque Avenir, when she partners with Chris Avenir. Her knowledge of the Gards-orm exceeds what she openly shares, fueling suspicions among allies like Lu-Shen. Her existence intertwines with the quantum servers; she is later revealed as a quantum fluctuation created by the iAL system, a rebellion against her creator, Naga. This revelation, initially known only to Shima, adds complexity to her identity and purpose. Her development culminates in the film *Zegapain ADP*, where her first encounter with Kyo occurs during the completion of the Altair. Here, she transitions from "Yehl" to "Shizuno Misaki" as Kyo recalls her significance. Post-battle, facing permanent deletion, she is granted humanity through a system upgrade facilitated by Lu-Shen. This transformation erases her memories, leading her to live as an ordinary student unaware of her past as an AI or her pivotal role in humanity's survival. Friends' attempts to recount her history are met with dismissal, as she interprets them as jokes. In the sequel *Zegapain STA* (2024), she appears as part of the "Olta Moda Arc." Her relationships define key arcs: she relinquishes her romantic bond with Kyo upon witnessing his new connection with Ryoko Kaminagi, though residual feelings surface later. She shares a trust-based alliance with Shima, rooted in mutual secrecy about the world's true state. Her partnership with Chris evolves into a supportive dynamic following Arque's death, highlighting her adaptability amid loss. Physically, she stands 168 cm tall with purple hair and eyes, often noted for her ethereal beauty and preference for long hair and glasses, which she associates with her "unlucky" persona.
