Description
Rintaro Futsu, vice-captain of the Shijo Minami Junior High boys' soft tennis club, sports medium-length chocolate-brown hair parted down the middle and brown eyes, often wearing a tennis cap during matches.

Adopted as an infant by loving parents after his unmarried young mother couldn't raise him, he believed himself their biological child until Japanese adoption laws required disclosure in fifth grade. Learning he was adopted triggered deep feelings of inadequacy and a belief he was an unwanted burden. Driven to prove his worth, he pushed himself relentlessly in academics and athletics, yet persistent self-doubt plagued him.

Academically gifted, he solves complex math problems effortlessly during class while distracted by tennis club planning, though he downplays his abilities. As vice-captain, he supports club operations, mediates conflicts, and comforts teammates—reassuring Itsuki after bullying or wiping Mitsue’s soiled shoes. His exceptional match analysis allows him to adapt strategies against opponents' weaknesses, earning praise from Maki for possessing the team's best game sense.

Maki Katsuragi's arrival intensified Rintaro's insecurities. Maki’s proactive contributions, like devising training plans and reorganizing doubles pairings, made Rintaro feel obsolete. He confided in captain Toma Shinjo, lamenting his perceived uselessness and blaming the team’s past failures on his leadership. During this emotional exchange, he revealed his adoption and lifelong fear of failing his parents. Toma reacted angrily, pointing out how loved Rintaro is by his adoptive family and dismissing his biological origins as irrelevant. This prompted an apology from Rintaro for his "selfishness," though underlying insecurities remained.

On court, partnered with Itsuki, he demonstrates resilience. After losing a set to Misaki Academy, he adjusted to the opponents' serve strength and speed, securing a comeback victory in the second set. Exhaustion led to eventual defeat, but his tactical adaptability shone. While he experienced personal growth acknowledging his value to the team, fundamental struggles with self-worth persisted. His birthday is February 14th.
