Description
Akina Myōdō is the central protagonist, a high school student primarily responsible for his chronically ill younger sister, Hikari Myōdō. Her lung condition originated from severe altitude sickness during a childhood mountain trip where she became separated. Akina carries deep guilt, believing his negligence caused her deteriorating health. Their father's frequent work absences solidify Akina's caretaker role, requiring him to reassure Hikari about their father's visits.
His personality centers on nurturing, extending beyond Hikari to classmates like Suo Yobitsugi. Akina demonstrates persistence and selflessness, prioritizing others' well-being over his own. This trait manifests when he cleans Suo's neglected apartment and prepares meals during a storm, learning about Suo's traumatic past involving his parents' death. Akina's determination intensifies upon learning the Fated Clash tournament offers a wish to cure Hikari, driving him to compete despite being a novice Vanguard player.
His Vanguard journey begins when the mysterious Gabwelius grants him the "Fated One of Miracles, Rezael" card and entry into the Fated Clash. He receives initial training from his senior coworker, Nao Inabe, constructing a Keter Sanctuary deck. His early victories rely on tactical adaptations, like forgoing defensive cards against professional fighter Taizo Kiyokura to maximize aggression. This adaptability, combined with his "Design Force" ability to create in-game miracles and resist supernatural corruption, enables him to defeat experienced opponents.
The Fated Clash escalates as Akina faces Suo in the finals. Before this, an older Hikari from an alternate future reveals Akina's original fate: defeat by Suo and death when Suo's wish for "nothing" triggers catastrophe. Despite Future Hikari's pleas to abandon the tournament, Akina persists, defeating her in a practice match and receiving "Liael-Amorta," a card designed to counter Suo's "Fated One of Zero, Blangdmire." During the final battle, Akina uses Liael-Amorta to survive Suo's decisive attack, defying fate. His victory grants his wish to cure Hikari and helps Suo process his emotional trauma.
Post-tournament, Akina adjusts to normal life with a healed Hikari and a sociable Suo as a frequent cardfighting partner. However, Sybilt, an entity linked to Hikari's original illness, initiates the "Destined Showdown." Akina participates again, confronting Hikari under Sybilt's influence. Hikari reveals resentment toward his self-destructive selflessness, wishing to rewrite history to free him from guilt. Their battle concludes with Future Hikari intervening to defeat Present Hikari, breaking Sybilt's control. This confrontation forces Akina to acknowledge his lack of personal dreams beyond caretaking. They reconcile, pledging mutual support.
After Sybilt's defeat, Akina actively seeks his own identity beyond caretaking. He engages more deeply with Vanguard as a personal pursuit, aspiring to become a professional fighter. This includes participating in subsequent tournaments like the Deluxe Arc to define Vanguard's meaning independently, even declining to adopt Hikari's suggested answers about his motivations.
Akina possesses unique abilities tied to his role. As a Fated One owner under Gabwelius's protection, he benefits from tournament-granted temporary immortality. His "Design Force" enables him to manifest in-game miracles, later revealed to counteract Sybilt's spiritual corruption. He has short dark blue hair with a distinctive red-to-white streaked forelock, often dressed in asymmetrically patterned red-and-white clothing over a black undershirt.
