Shigeo Kageyama, commonly nicknamed "Mob" from the alternative reading of the kanji in his given name meaning "dull" or "uninteresting," is a middle school student born with immense psychic abilities. He has a short, slim stature, jet-black bowl-shaped hair, and typically a nondescript facial expression. When his emotional state reaches 100%, his eyes glow red or white, his hair becomes spiky and floats, and his expression shifts to reflect his overwhelming emotion.
His psychic powers include telekinesis, enabling him to move heavy objects like buildings, create force fields, fly, and reconstruct matter on a molecular level. He can project his astral form, sense spiritual energy within a 20-kilometer radius, exorcise spirits by touch, absorb psychic energy from others and the environment, and transfer his energy to both espers and non-espers. He later develops chlorokinesis, the ability to manipulate and accelerate plant growth. These abilities are restrained by emotional locks due to a childhood incident where his powers caused harm, leading him to suppress his emotions. When a specific emotion reaches 100%, it triggers a powerful release of power tailored to that emotion, such as 100% Rage, 100% Courage, or 100% Gratitude. An uncontrollable state known as ???% emerges when he is unconscious or under extreme stress, granting even greater power without conscious control.
Mob is reserved, socially anxious, and emotionally suppressive, stemming from a fear of harming others with his powers. He struggles with reading social cues and often appears aloof. Despite this, he is deeply compassionate, empathetic, and morally principled, refusing to use his abilities against people unless absolutely necessary for protection. He believes psychic powers do not make him superior to others and values self-improvement through ordinary means, which leads him to join the Body Improvement Club to enhance his physical health and social skills. Over time, he becomes more confident and assertive, particularly in his relationship with his mentor, Reigen Arataka, whom he eventually confronts about being used as a tool.
His background involves a childhood accident where his powers injured his younger brother, Ritsu, leading him to seek guidance from Reigen, a self-proclaimed psychic who becomes his mentor. Reigen teaches him that psychic abilities are not for personal gain or violence, shaping Mob's ethical stance. Mob works part-time at Reigen's Spirits and Such Consultation Office, assisting with exorcisms.
Key events include encounters with various antagonists, such as the organization Claw, where he battles powerful espers like Toichiro Suzuki. During these conflicts, Mob often strives to reason with his enemies, offering friendship and empathy instead of violence. In his confrontation with Suzuki, Mob chooses to stay with him during his self-destruction attempt, demonstrating his compassion. He also experiences significant personal trials, such as being trapped in a mental world by the esper Mogami for six months, where he endures bullying but emerges with a renewed appreciation for his real-life relationships and a less naive outlook.
Mob's development includes reconciling with his repressed emotions and learning to accept himself. This culminates in his rejection of Reigen's exploitation, his confession of feelings to his childhood crush Tsubomi—though rejected—and his eventual acceptance of both his powers and ordinary life. He achieves balance by the series' end, becoming vice-president of the Body Improvement Club and maintaining his friendships.
In ancillary stories, Mob assists Reigen with writing a book and helps investigate a hot spring spirit, further illustrating his dedication to his mentor and friends despite their often unconventional situations.
