Description
Sōshirō Hoshina holds the position of vice-captain in the Defense Force's Third Division. He hails from the Hoshina family, a lineage of kaiju slayers dating back to the Muromachi period, with ancestors renowned as formidable swordsmen in the Sengoku era. Rigorous childhood training in traditional swordsmanship defined his early years, undertaken despite societal views deeming blades obsolete. This period was shadowed by a sense of inferiority towards his older brother, Soichiro Hoshina, celebrated as the family prodigy who consistently bested Sōshirō in sparring. Their father reinforced this dynamic, acknowledging Soichiro as the family's "ultimate incarnation" while overlooking Sōshirō's potential. These experiences fueled Sōshirō's complete dedication to mastering the sword, forming his core identity and reason for living.

Physically, Sōshirō possesses an athletic build of average height (171 cm), characterized by dark violet hair in a bob cut and eyes depicted as red in the manga and purple in the anime. He habitually smiles but reveals snaggletooth fangs when speaking or laughing. His standard operational wear is the Defense Force combat suit. After bonding with Kaiju No. 10, he utilizes the Numbers Weapon 10 suit—light-purple, scale-like armor with green outlines, a mechanical tail, and an embedded eye derived from Kaiju No. 10 on the chest plate.

Personality-wise, Sōshirō exhibits a consistently laid-back and cheerful demeanor, often employing Kansai dialect in casual interactions and engaging in light teasing, particularly directed at colleagues like Kafka Hibino and Gen Narumi. Despite this outward levity, he demonstrates sharp perceptiveness and intuition, exemplified by his early suspicion of Kafka’s identity as Kaiju No. 8. During combat or critical situations, his demeanor shifts to intense seriousness, his eyes opening to convey resolve. He harbors deep loyalty to the Defense Force and profound gratitude toward Captain Mina Ashiro for valuing his swordsmanship. His commitment stems from a belief that his lifelong dedication to the blade must serve a purpose in protecting others. A pivotal moment occurs when Kaiju No. 10 forces him to confront his genuine enjoyment of swordsmanship, leading him to embrace this "simplemindedness" as his fundamental motivation for growth.

Sōshirō specializes in the Hoshina Style (保科流, Hoshina-ryū), focusing on close-quarters combat with bladed weapons. His expertise lies primarily in the Dual-Blade Form (二刀型, Nitō-gata), utilizing custom high-frequency twin swords (SW-2033) or a katana (SW-1023) to execute techniques like quick-slash, storm-slash, and haze-slash. He also demonstrates proficiency in single-blade techniques such as Oboro Nuki and Wind Hole. His combat abilities include exceptional speed, reflexes, and precision, enabling him to counter kaiju like No. 8, No. 10, and No. 12. Initially, his unleashed combat power peaks at 92% in standard suits, risking overheating. After acquiring the sentient Numbers Weapon 10 suit—which initially dampened his physical capabilities due to its independent consciousness—he achieves temporary synchronization, reaching 100% output and unlocking enhanced strength and tail-based attacks. During the battle against Kaiju No. 12, he develops a new three-sword technique mid-fight, ultimately destroying its core.

Beyond swordsmanship, he adapts martial arts techniques learned from Isao Shinomiya, later refining and teaching them to Kafka Hibino to overcome overreliance on kaiju regeneration. Sōshirō also exhibits leadership in coordinating platoons during operations and strategic intellect in predicting enemy movements, such as deducing Kaiju No. 9’s location.

His relationships define key aspects of his role. As vice-captain, he operates directly under Mina Ashiro, supporting her command while compensating for her long-range artillery specialization with his close-combat prowess against small-to-medium kaiju. He facilitates Kafka Hibino’s entry into the Third Division as a special recruit, recognizing his latent potential despite failing the standard exam. Though initially monitoring Kafka due to suspicions about Kaiju No. 8, he later expresses gratitude after Kafka saves his life and subordinates. Sōshirō mentors Kafka in Shinomiya-style combat, urging him to develop genuine strength beyond his kaiju abilities. His dynamic with his brother, Soichiro, remains distant due to childhood rivalries, though Soichiro later acknowledges Sōshirō as the greatest swordsman in their clan's history. Following battles, Sōshirō forges a partnership with Kaiju No. 10, bonding over their shared enthusiasm for combat.

Sōshirō’s development includes events like the Defense Force’s conflict against Kaiju No. 12, where near-defeat and Kaiju No. 10’s intervention push him to master the Numbers Weapon 10 suit. Later, during Meireki’s Great Kaiju battle, he assists allies against the transformed Kaiju No. 9, though harboring unease toward Kafka’s escalating regenerative abilities. Outside duty, he enjoys reading, coffee, and Mont Blanc cake.
