Description
Kafka Hibino is a 32-year-old former cleaner for Monster Sweeper Inc., disposing of kaiju remains. A childhood kaiju attack destroying his hometown led him and Mina Ashiro to vow joining the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force. Mina succeeded, becoming Third Division captain, while Kafka repeatedly failed the entrance exams. He abandoned his dream until meeting young part-timer Reno Ichikawa, who reignited his resolve. During this time, a parasitic kaiju entered Kafka's body, granting him the ability to transform into the humanoid kaiju designated Kaiju No. 8. This power enabled him to finally pass the entrance exam alongside Reno, though Kafka was initially admitted only as a cadet. He later earned promotion to full officer in the Third Division before transferring to the First Division.

In human form, Kafka stands tall with dark brown spiky hair, thin eyebrows, a mild goatee, and a muscular frame featuring a slightly pudgy belly. He wears the standard dark green Defense Force officer uniform with grey shoulder, wrist, and leg pads. His initial kaiju form manifests as a humanoid covered in coal-black scales and plates, with bursts of cyan energy visible in the cracks. It has a skull-like face with exposed bone, short thick horns, black sclera with cyan irises, and sharp teeth extending down the neck. When losing control, he grows larger, his horns and dorsal plates elongate, and his eyes turn fully cyan without pupils. After a near-fatal injury transformed his human heart into a kaiju core, he underwent metamorphosis. His evolved kaiju form sheds the black scales for a white body while retaining the energy cracks, features inward-curving horns with small eyes along each curve, and sports four maple leaf-shaped dorsal plates on his back.

Kafka displays a comically childish and expressive personality casually, often teased about his age; he reacts with annoyance to being called an "old man" while emphasizing his seniority. Yet, during serious situations, he reveals deep determination and dedication, striving relentlessly for his goals. He is inherently caring and kind, proactively helping others—solving inconveniences, rescuing people, or scolding them for self-neglect. This compassion fuels intense insecurity when he fears failing those who trust him. His greatest fear is losing control of his kaiju form, retaining full awareness but unable to stop rampages when overwhelmed. This terror initially prevents him from using his powers until allies encourage him to trust his comrades and the Defense Force. He remains highly emotional, openly crying during triumphs or stress, and prioritizes protecting civilians and teammates at great personal risk.

Kafka's abilities originate from the parasitic kaiju merged with his physiology. He can fully or partially transform into Kaiju No. 8, manifesting specific body parts like limbs, tentacles, or weaponized appendages. This form grants immense strength—obliterating honju-level kaiju with single punches, lifting vehicles, and overpowering foes like Kaiju No. 9 or Isao Shinomiya. It provides extreme durability, tanking slashes from enhanced blades, energy blasts, and fatal impacts. His speed and reflexes allow him to evade attacks from skilled fighters like Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina and outpace energy barrages. Enhanced senses detect distant or hidden kaiju. However, his kaiju biology severely limits compatibility with Defense Force combat suits; he initially releases 0% of their power, later improving to just 1%, rendering them nearly useless for enhancing his human form. His fortitude level is measured at 9.8—the highest recorded—classifying him as a daikaiju. Prolonged kaiju form use risks permanent physical transformation, and overexertion damages his body due to age. Post-metamorphosis, his power evolves further, fueled by an unending stream of negative emotions from ancient warriors, making his fortitude unmeasurable and enabling him to deflect energy blasts and battle entities like the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era.

Kafka's journey centers on mastering his dual identity. Early on, he conceals his kaiju form from all but Reno Ichikawa and Kikoru Shinomiya, whom he saved during the entrance exam. He initially struggles with accidental activations and fear of losing control but gradually learns strategic use, like partial transformations to flip a van or generate a mouth to disarm an opponent. During the Sagamihara operation, he intervenes as Kaiju No. 8 to protect Reno from Kaiju No. 9 but flees to avoid exposure. His secret is forcibly revealed when he transforms to save Tachikawa Base from Kaiju No. 10, leading to his apprehension. After defeating Director General Isao Shinomiya in a duel, Kafka gains conditional acceptance. Training rigorously with the First Division, he confronts Kaiju No. 9 during the Shinagawa attack and a later full-scale invasion. Protecting Mina from No. 9, Kafka suffers a mortal wound, triggering the emergence of the Meireki-era kaiju and his own metamorphosis. Surviving, he embraces his new form to combat this ancient threat. Kafka evolves from a self-doubting cleaner to a confident officer who reconciles his human resolve with his kaiju abilities to fulfill his childhood promise.
