Description
Kafka Hibino is a 32-year-old man who stands 181 centimeters tall and whose birthday is August 5. Before the events of the story, he worked as a cleaner for Monster Sweeper Inc., a professional company that specialized in the disposal of kaiju corpses. This job, while humble and dangerous, provided him with an extensive, practical knowledge of kaiju anatomy and weaknesses, a skill that would later prove invaluable. In his personal life, he enjoys curry, hamburg steak, and previously alcohol and cigarettes, though he reduced his consumption to focus on his goals.
In terms of personality, Kafka is characterized by his sense of responsibility and his kindness. Even during his grueling work as a kaiju cleaner, he performed the most difficult tasks without complaint and showed empathy toward his younger colleagues. He is described as having a self-sacrificing nature, often disregarding his own safety to protect others. Despite being significantly older than most recruits, his friendly and approachable demeanor allows him to connect easily with his peers. He is also a person of strong conviction; when he becomes genuinely angry, he acts without regard for the consequences, driven by a desire to protect those close to him.
Kafka’s primary motivation stems from a childhood promise. After a kaiju destroyed their hometown, he and his friend Mina Ashiro vowed to stand side-by-side and eliminate kaiju together as members of the Defense Force. However, while Mina excelled and became the young captain of the Third Division, Kafka repeatedly failed the entrance exams and eventually abandoned his dream. A chance encounter with his younger co-worker, Reno Ichikawa, reignited his passion, and he decided to make one final attempt to join the Force. This resolve is cemented when a mysterious, small kaiju forces its way into his body, granting him the ability to transform into a powerful humanoid kaiju while retaining his human consciousness and sense of self. With this newfound power, designated Kaiju No. 8 by the Defense Force, Kafka seeks to protect humanity and finally earn a place beside Mina.
Within the story, Kafka serves as the protagonist whose unique dual existence as both a human cadet and a kaiju drives the central conflict. Initially, he struggles with his identity, fearing discovery and rejection. He enrolls in the Defense Force while concealing his secret, and despite a very low compatibility score of 0% to 1% with the standard combat suits, he uses his extensive knowledge from his cleaning days to provide tactical support and pass the exams. His role shifts from a hidden asset to a controversial figure when he repeatedly transforms to save his comrades from powerful threats, most notably during the Aptitude Test when he saves the prodigy Kikoru Shinomiya, and later at Tachikawa Base where he reveals his identity to prevent a catastrophic attack.
Kafka’s key relationships heavily define his character arc. His bond with Mina Ashiro is the foundation of his lifelong dream; though she treats him with formal coldness as his captain, their shared history remains a powerful emotional anchor for both. Reno Ichikawa is perhaps his closest ally, the friend who reignited his dream and continues to support his secret, creating a mutual bond of trust and rivalry. His relationship with Kikoru Shinomiya evolves from antagonistic to a deep mutual respect after he saves her life; she swears to personally kill him if he ever becomes a threat, but also advocates fiercely for his humanity. Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina initially suspects Kafka but later becomes a mentor, training him in combat and ultimately expressing gratitude when Kafka saves the division, even as he feels competitive about their previous fight. His primary antagonist is Kaiju No. 9, a shapeshifting humanoid kaiju he despises for injuring his friends and posing the greatest existential threat.
Kafka undergoes significant development as the story progresses. He begins as a disillusioned middle-aged man who had accepted his failure, then transforms into a determined individual willing to shoulder the impossible burden of being a hunted weapon for the sake of his dream. He learns to control his powers, moving from accidental transformations to strategic uses in combat, and eventually accepts his role as a protector, even when it means revealing his secret and facing arrest by his childhood friend. His development also includes learning formal hand-to-hand combat techniques from Hoshina, which he adapts into his own hybrid fighting style.
Kafka’s notable abilities are divided between his human and kaiju forms. As a human, he possesses no superhuman combat abilities, but his years as a cleaner grant him expert-level knowledge of kaiju biology, which he uses to locate cores and identify weaknesses. As Kaiju No. 8, he has a fortitude rating of 9.8, placing him among the most powerful kaiju on record. In this form, he gains immense superhuman strength, capable of obliterating large kaiju with a single punch, as well as high-speed regeneration, allowing him to reattach or regrow limbs. He can also sense the presence and location of other kaiju, has jet propulsion built into his limbs for high-speed charges and limited flight, and can use his roar as a defensive force field. His primary weakness is his kaiju core, located in his torso, which is a vital organ; damage to it impairs his abilities and can be fatal. Additionally, his transformation has a time limit, and if overwhelmed by powerful emotions like fear, he may be unable to transform.
