Description
Reno Ichikawa starts his career as a new recruit at Monster Sweeper Inc., a kaiju disposal firm, partnered with Kafka Hibino. He initially joined under the misconception that the role was part of the Defense Force aptitude test. Reno maintains composure but questions Kafka's choice to abandon his Defense Force dream. This changes when Kafka rescues him from a yoju attack, forging deep loyalty. Reno then motivates Kafka to retake the Defense Force exam and later aids him in hiding his accidental transformation into Kaiju No. 8.
Reno passes the Defense Force entrance exam with Kafka, joining the Third Division. Training reveals his initial unleashed combat power at 8% in a standard suit, rising to 18% post-marksmanship training. His early tactics prioritize strategy, using cryo bullets to immobilize kaiju through analysis and problem-solving. He develops a secondary rivalry with cadet Iharu Furuhashi, who sees him as competition, though Reno stays focused on protecting comrades over rivalry.
After Kaiju No. 10 destroys the Third Division's Tachikawa Base, Reno transfers to the Fourth Division. He undergoes specialized training to wield Numbers Weapon 6, a suit forged from Kaiju No. 6's remains. This grants cryokinetic abilities, generating ice for offense, defense, and mobility—instantly freezing foes or stabilizing footing. The weapon drastically boosts his speed and combat effectiveness, allowing him to neutralize multiple daikaiju at once. However, the suit dangerously amplifies his sense of duty, pushing him to overexert until he suffers muscle tears and bone fractures. His unleashed combat power reaches 43% normally and 51% when straining.
Reno's relationships drive his growth. His bond with Kafka evolves from mentorship to mutual reliance; Reno offers vital emotional support and tactical aid during Kafka's struggles with his kaiju form. Towards Iharu Furuhashi, Reno exhibits protectiveness, notably stalling Kaiju No. 9 while severely injured to ensure Iharu's safety. Officers recognize his potential: Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina identifies him as future captain material, and Fourth Division Captain Jugo Ogata deems him a prodigy for mastering Numbers Weapon 6 in one month—a growth rate exceeding elite officers like Kikoru Shinomiya.
In later conflicts, Reno's role extends to large-scale defense. During Kaiju No. 9's invasion of Japan, he deploys upgraded Numbers Weapon 6 cannons to freeze entire daikaiju hordes, clearing paths for allies like Kafka to reach critical zones. His tactical skill and self-sacrificing nature persist, though he gradually balances duty with self-preservation. Outside duty, his interests include music, cooking, and shonen manga.
