Description
Dan Davis is an American track athlete specializing in the 100-meter sprint. His revoked world record of 8.99 seconds resulted from a failed drug test, yet he persisted in competing despite his coach's warnings about potential physical damage. During a later race, his intense focus and exertion caused his leg muscles to rupture. He continued running at extraordinary speed, an effort that triggered an unstable signal within the simulated reality, alerting overseeing entities.
These entities froze time and possessed other runners to physically restrain him, but Davis broke through both the temporal freeze and their grasp. As he neared the finish line, his perception shifted to a reality composed of crimson code, leading to an awakening inside a liquid-filled pod in the physical world. He instinctively tried to run, tearing free from some connective apparatus before an automated system forcibly tranquilized him. His memory of the event was erased, and he was reintegrated into the simulation at the race's conclusion. He collapsed after crossing the finish line with a new world record of 8.72 seconds.
Following the race, paralysis confined Davis to a wheelchair under continuous monitoring by the entities, who deemed him non-threatening. During a hospital corridor conversation, he dropped walnuts he was manipulating and uttered "Free" in a resonant voice. Defying his paralysis, he shattered his leg braces and began to rise, reaching skyward as his hair and clothes billowed without wind. He collapsed physically as medical staff approached, while the entities monitoring him vanished during the incident. The nature of his final defiance—whether a brief resurgence or lasting liberation—remains unresolved.
