Description
Arataka Reigen operates a self-proclaimed psychic business, the Spirits and Such Consultation Office, declaring himself the "Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century." He possesses no actual supernatural abilities, relying instead on manipulation, psychological insight, and practical skills like therapeutic massage to address client concerns. His ethically ambiguous methods include fabricated exorcisms and spiritual consultations, though he offers refunds for unsatisfactory results and expresses disdain for frauds providing no tangible service.

Physically tall with reddish-blond hair, he typically wears business attire but occasionally adopts unconventional disguises, including a high school girls' uniform. His demeanor features expressive facial reactions and frequent sweating.

His background involves an uneventful adolescence marked by above-average academics and a prior salaryman career before founding his consultation office. His life shifted upon encountering Shigeo Kageyama, a powerful esper seeking guidance. Recognizing the boy's abilities, Reigen hired him as an assistant, forging their mentor-student relationship.

A complex dichotomy defines his personality: he readily deceives clients, spirits, and allies for personal gain yet adheres to a core principle against causing harm. He exhibits profound social and emotional intelligence, analyzing individuals and diffusing volatile situations through dialogue alone, as demonstrated when he psychologically dismantled members of the Claw organization. This perceptiveness extends to navigating his student's stoicism to offer life advice.

His development centers on his relationship with Mob. Initially exploiting the boy's powers for business, Reigen grows genuinely protective, prioritizing Mob’s emotional well-being over practical outcomes. He advises against using powers during conflicts to spare Mob psychological suffering, intervenes when others pressure him, and confronts lethal threats without esper abilities. This bond evolves into mutual dependence, with Reigen fearing abandonment as Mob gains independence—a tension culminating in Mob temporarily leaving him. Reigen subsequently proves capable of managing cases alone, acknowledging his dependency stemmed from viewing Mob as his first true friend. Their reconciliation solidifies a healthier dynamic, with Reigen expressing pride in Mob’s personal growth.

In the OVA "REIGEN: The Miraculous Unknown Psychic," he attempts to author a book chronicling his adventures, recounting Season One events while heavily embellishing his role—claiming credit for exorcisms performed by Mob and others. When Mob writes a factual account under peer review, Reigen initially resists the narrative portraying him as a fraud but accepts the outcome after their crowdfunding campaign fails catastrophically, securing only 1% of its goal (largely from his donation). The project concludes with them sharing ramen, highlighting Reigen’s financial limitations and commitment to their bond.

A temporary acquisition of psychic abilities during the Claw arc did not alter his worldview; he dismissed the powers as insignificant and maintained that espers hold no inherent superiority. His name carries ironic wordplay: "Reigen" (霊幻) references spirits, while his full name evokes "reigenarataka" ("strikingly blessed by the gods").
