After a forced transformation into a child's body, the teenage detective Shinichi Kudo adopts the alias Conan Edogawa. Previously renowned as the 17-year-old "Heisei Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese Police Force," Shinichi witnessed a clandestine transaction by the Black Organization at Tropical Land. Ambushed and administered the experimental poison APTX 4869, he miraculously survived, his body regressing to that of a six or seven-year-old while retaining his intellect, memories, and personality.
Seeking refuge with neighbor Professor Hiroshi Agasa, Shinichi reveals his identity. They devise a cover: he becomes Conan Edogawa, named for authors Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo. Agasa places him under the care of childhood friend Ran Mouri and her father, Kogoro Mouri, a struggling private detective, gaining both protection and potential access to Black Organization cases through Kogoro's agency.
Maintaining his disguise, Conan outwardly acts as a child, calling Ran "Ran-neechan" and referring to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan." He enrolls at Teitan Elementary School, befriending classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima. Together they form the Detective Boys, solving minor mysteries. Initially dismissive, Conan warms to them, sometimes assigning investigative tasks.
Conan solves cases covertly using Agasa's inventions: a tranquilizer watch to sedate Kogoro and a voice-modulating bowtie to simulate Kogoro's voice, presenting deductions as "Sleeping Kogoro." This elevates Kogoro's reputation. Occasionally, in Ran's absence, he uses her friend Sonoko Suzuki as a proxy, earning her minor recognition as another "sleeping" detective.
His core goals drive him: dismantling the Black Organization, securing an APTX 4869 antidote, and restoring his body. He encounters another APTX 4869 victim, Ai Haibara (formerly Shiho Miyano, the organization's "Sherry"), who becomes an ally and joins the Detective Boys. His pursuit evolves from underestimating the organization to strategic operations, aided by allies like FBI agent Shuichi Akai and CIA operative Hidemi Hondou ("Kir").
Conan retains Shinichi's vast knowledge, sharp observation, and athletic skill, especially soccer. To compensate for his child's strength, he uses Agasa's power-enhancing kick shoes, employing precision kicks against criminals. He struggles to conceal his intellect during investigations, often attributing deductions to television, Agasa, or Shinichi. He remains tone-deaf, a trait from his original self.
Ethically, Conan insists criminals face justice but shows leniency to those attempting murder due to misunderstandings. After failing to prevent a culprit's suicide early on, he adopts the principle that a detective must prevent such outcomes, viewing inaction as murder. This conviction haunts him during subsequent failures.
Key relationships include his unspoken bond with Ran Mouri, who protects Conan unaware of his identity. This creates complex situations, like Ran confessing feelings for Shinichi to Conan or insisting he bathe with her. His law enforcement interactions are limited, though he communicates professionally with certain FBI agents (e.g., Jodie Starling, Shuichi Akai) and Nagano Inspector Kansuke Yamato, who suspect his unusual capabilities.
Throughout investigations, Conan accumulates nicknames: "Cool Kid" (Jodie Starling), "Silver Bullet-kun" (Vermouth), "Holmes’ Apprentice" (Apollo Glass), and "KID Killer" (Kaito Kid). Allies note crimes follow him; Sonoko Suzuki remarks on their inevitability in his presence, while Haibara sarcastically mimics his "Ah-le-le?" expression of feigned childish curiosity at crime scenes.
Conan appears beyond the main series in films, OVAs, and spin-offs. His gadgets extend beyond the tranquilizer watch and bowtie, including dual-identity cell phones and a badge walkie-talkie for the Detective Boys. His blood type matches Ran's. Preferences like iced coffee and curry appear occasionally. He often juggles a soccer ball or supports his chin while deep in thought during complex cases.
