Description
Natsumi Kyouno is the seventh Spirit to appear in the Date A Live series, first introduced earlier in the story and continuing as a major supporting character in Date A Live IV. Her background is marked by a deeply troubled childhood. Growing up as an illegitimate child in an abusive household, she was used by her mother solely for the secret hush money provided by her absent father. Her mother refused to feed her regularly and constantly belittled her appearance. Desperate to survive, Natsumi accepted an offer to become a Spirit. With her newfound power, she retaliated by transforming her mother into a frog, but stopped short of killing her.
Natsumi's personality before her powers were sealed is best described as self-loathing and overwhelmingly negative. She perceives everything, especially herself, through a pessimistic lens. This low self-esteem drives her to use her shapeshifting abilities to assume a tall, glamorous adult form, believing that her true, small, plain appearance is ugly and unworthy of attention. Even after being accepted into Shido Itsuka's group and having her powers sealed, she struggles to be honest about her feelings. However, she does acknowledge the other Spirits as friends and develops a particular reverence for Yoshino, whom she worships almost like an angel. Her negative emotions are paradoxically the fuel for her abilities; she can amplify her power by feeding on her own negativity.
Her central motivation throughout the story is the search for self-acceptance. On the surface, she enjoys teasing others with her shapeshifting and playing mischievous pranks, but underneath she desperately wants to be valued for who she really is. This internal conflict drives her character arc, which culminates in learning to embrace her true self with the help of Shido's unwavering kindness and the support of the other Spirits.
In the narrative of Date A Live IV, Natsumi plays an active role as part of Shido's inner circle. She contributes her talents during the arc involving the new Spirit Nia Honjou, taking the lead in drawing the manga that the group creates for the Comico festival. She also participates in the subsequent mission to save the space-bound Spirit Mukuro Hoshimiya, using her abilities to support the group. Her role is that of a capable, if reluctant, ally who gradually moves from self-isolation to genuine teamwork.
Key relationships shape her growth. Shido Itsuka is the primary figure who helps her overcome her insecurities, consistently complimenting her true form and convincing her of her intrinsic worth. She forms a close bond with Yoshino, who provides emotional stability and companionship. Her interactions with Kotori Itsuka and the other Spirits are often marked by bickering and teasing, but there is underlying trust and camaraderie.
Natsumi's notable abilities revolve around transformation and illusion. She can change her own appearance to anything she desires, as well as transform objects, people, and even the surrounding environment within a certain range. Her Angel, named Haniel, grants her the power to fly by riding a broom, copy skills such as drawing, writing, and music, and create perfect impersonations. She can also send entities into a separate dimension through mirrors, where time is stopped. Among her most remarkable feats is the ability to duplicate the Angels of other Spirits, though these copies are weaker than the originals. This makes her versatile in non-combat situations, though her skill set is more about deception and support than direct confrontation. Throughout her development, her powers evolve as her confidence grows, allowing her to maintain her adult form even after sealing while still retaining her original magic.
