Description
Otto serves as a soldier at Ehrenfest's city gate alongside Gunther, Myne’s father. His background as a traveling merchant endowed him with valuable commercial connections, which he leverages for administrative duties. Literacy and numeracy skills uncommon among soldiers place him in charge of accounting ledgers, supply procurement, and bureaucratic paperwork, often overworking him during peak seasons. He instructs apprentices in reading, writing, and arithmetic but displays impatience with slow learners, refusing those he deems a waste of time.

He abandoned plans to open a store near Frenbeltag after meeting Corinna, Benno’s younger sister. Spending his entire savings on Ehrenfest citizenship, he secured his soldier position through merchant contacts—a risk that potentially alienated the merchant guildmaster who arranged Corinna’s marriage to his son. Otto considered the sacrifice worthwhile to marry Corinna; they have a daughter, Renate, and reside on the third floor of the Gilberta Company building.

Otto notices Myne’s fascination with a merchant’s scroll and provides her a secondhand stone slate, teaching her to write her name. This mentorship formalizes: Myne assists his accounting work in exchange for writing lessons and slate pencils. Recognizing her rapid learning, he offers advanced literacy instruction after other students depart. Their professional relationship includes negotiation, such as trading nails for Myne’s hair care products, and Otto advises her on business matters like securing investors.

He retains a persistent merchant mindset, habitually bargaining in transactions. Demonstrating pronounced devotion to family, he frequently praises Corinna and Renate, often irritating listeners. His appearance features brown hair, gentle brown eyes, and slightly more affluent attire than fellow soldiers, reflecting his merchant roots.

Notably, Otto dissuades Lutz from traveling trade by explaining the consequences of relinquishing city citizenship, then facilitates Lutz’s introduction to Benno as an apprentice. He also originates the rumor identifying Myne as Benno’s "Goddess of Water." Later, he assumes leadership of the Gilberta Company, maintaining both merchant acumen and familial dedication.
