Description
Enju, also known in some romanizations as Enjyu, is a prominent character recognized for his striking appearance. He has deep red, spiky hair and light blue eyes, with a noticeable scar across his face. Standing at 167 centimeters tall and weighing 45 kilograms, his typical attire consists of a purple jumpsuit decorated with lightning motifs, complemented by gloves and boots; the design of his outfit varies between shorts in the first story arc and full-length pants in the second.
His background is marked by a deeply troubled past that fundamentally shapes his worldview. As a talented young B-Daman player, Enju was forced by his father, Taiju, to deliberately lose matches in exchange for money from opponents, a scheme used to pay their rent. Growing tired of this corrupt existence, Enju entered a junior tournament with the intention of playing honestly. However, he was publicly disqualified and falsely accused of cheating, a betrayal orchestrated by his only friend at the time, Cornell. This traumatic event caused a visible transformation; his hair changed from its original medium blue to deep red, and his personality became bitter and cynical.
Driven by these past betrayals, Enju develops a cold, lonely, and power-driven personality, valuing strength above all else. He frequently acts as a loner and can display a sadistic streak, showing little mercy to opponents or even bystanders as seen when he strikes down the character Liena. His motivations are rooted in a rejection of happiness and fair play, which he views as weaknesses, and a relentless pursuit of power to ensure he is never vulnerable again. This cynicism leads him to join the Shadow Alliance, where he receives the advanced B-Daman known as Lightning Kahn, a counterpart to the protagonist Yamato's Cobalt Blade.
In the story, Enju serves initially as a formidable rival and antagonist to the main character, Yamato Delgado. His role is highlighted during the IBA Winners Tournament, where he easily defeats Yamato's friend Berkhart and psychologically torments Wen Yong Fa during their match. His desire for more power leads him to accept dark magic enhancements from the villain Marda B, transforming his B-Daman into the even more powerful Blazing Kahn. This culminates in a long and grueling final match against Yamato, lasting forty rounds. During this battle, Enju recounts his painful past and explains his hatred for happiness. However, as the fight progresses, he makes a conscious decision to reject Ababa's interference and battle fairly. After Yamato ultimately defeats him, Enju begins a path toward redemption.
His key relationships are central to his development. His rivalry with Yamato evolves from pure antagonism into mutual respect and friendship. His relationship with his father, whom he confronts in a B-DaBattle that triggers his initial change, remains a source of emotional vulnerability. Later, seeking to atone, Enju infiltrates the Neo Shadow Alliance by pretending to betray his allies, even destroying Terry McScotty's B-Daman in a staged fight to maintain his cover. His plan involves stealing Marda B's energy source from within the enemy hideout. This leads to a confrontation where he is defeated and brainwashed by Marda Biarce, only to be freed when Terry defeats him in that controlled state, after which he joins the final battle against the main villains.
Throughout his journey, Enju demonstrates notable abilities as an exceptionally skilled B-Daman player. His talent is established early on when he passes a difficult qualification test alone and in less than half the time it takes others. He possesses superior shooting skills, strategic cunning, and psychological warfare tactics, which he uses to dominate opponents. Even after rejecting dark power, his natural abilities and experience make him a powerful ally. In the manga adaptation, his role includes being the head of the Shadow Alliance, and he is known for making flashy motorcycle entrances at tournaments, using his tactical knowledge to assist Yamato and his friends in battles against major threats like Cain, Joshua, and Biarce.
