Description
Kaede Otori is a student at Itan Private High School and a classmate of Shouko Komi and Hitohito Tadano, introduced in the first year and continuing as a member of their broader social circle throughout the story. Her birthday is June 10, and her height is recorded as 162.6 centimeters. She comes from an extremely wealthy family and lives in a home so large it is often described as a castle, a residence so expansive that she sometimes becomes lost inside it.

Kaede is most recognizable for her exceptionally slow and laid-back demeanor, which permeates every aspect of her personality. She speaks with a gentle drawl, responds to questions after a noticeable delay, and moves at a pace that often leaves her trailing behind others. This lethargy is not born of disinterest but rather stems from a very relaxed internal processing speed, giving her an air of being perpetually daydreamy or absent-minded. Despite this slowness, or perhaps because of it, she possesses a kind, gentle, and unwaveringly serene disposition that makes her highly approachable. Her expression is habitually soft, with her eyes often appearing as thin, closed lines and a small ahoge, or cowlick, protruding from the top of her head. She wears her long black hair in a signature low ponytail with a bow.

One of Kaede's most notable quirks is her tendency to vanish unexpectedly. If left unsupervised for even a brief moment, she has a knack for wandering off and reappearing in completely different or inappropriate locations, a trait that often raises concerns for her safety. This behavior is so pronounced that she has been known to accidentally find herself in restricted areas or become fascinated for hours or even days by a continuous motion, such as a flowing oil timer or a video of a fireplace, losing all track of time. Her mother shares a similar predisposition for getting lost or disoriented.

Her primary role in the story is as a supportive and warm-hearted friend to Shouko Komi. She is notable for being the second person to successfully elicit verbal communication from the otherwise silent Komi, likely because her own slow, non-demanding conversational pace allows Komi the time she needs to respond. Kaede first became friends with Komi and Nene Onemine while running an errand together during a school festival preparation, and she later expressed that she had wanted to befriend Komi after observing her positive interactions with Tadano and Najimi Osana.

Her most significant relationship is with her classmate Nene Onemine. The two are frequently seen together and are known as the Bibi-tto duo, a nickname derived from the shared kanji character in their surnames. Kaede affectionately calls Nene Nee-nee, and she is a regular guest at Onemine's home, where Nene's younger siblings refer to her as Kaede-neechan. Onemine acts as a protective and guiding presence for Kaede, often holding her hand specifically to prevent her from suddenly wandering away and disappearing, a tactic employed most notably during a school trip to New York. Her friend group also includes Shouko Komi, Hitohito Tadano, and Najimi Osana, where her gentle nature fits in seamlessly.

A subtle development in Kaede's character is the quiet recognition of her thoughtfulness. While her external demeanor is consistently relaxed and slow, some classmates have noted that she may be more perceptive and considerate than her airheaded appearance suggests. Her motivations are simple and genuine: she wishes for friendship and connection, and she approaches this goal with a pure, unassuming sincerity that helps others feel at ease.

Regarding abilities, Kaede does not excel in most physical or athletic activities due to her slow reflexes and lack of speed. However, she demonstrates significant flexibility, a skill derived from a background in practicing ballet, which allows her to perform exceptionally well on flexibility tests like the sit-and-reach. Additionally, her placid and gentle nature is remarkably appealing to animals, particularly cats, who tend to gather around her in cat cafes.
