He devoted himself to the DMMORPG YGGDRASIL as the heteromorphic skeleton mage Momonga, investing heavily despite financial strain. Frequently targeted by player-killers, he formed the clan Nine’s Own Goal with Touch Me—who rescued him during an attack—later evolving it into the guild Ainz Ooal Gown. The guild conquered the Great Tomb of Nazarick, securing World Items. Momonga ascended to guildmaster through leadership rather than combat strength, managing the base solo as members gradually quit, becoming YGGDRASIL’s sole active player by its shutdown.

During the game’s final moments, Momonga lingered in Nazarick’s throne room. At shutdown, he awoke in the New World as a true undead Overlord: fleshless skeleton with glowing crimson eye sockets, a floating red orb within his ribcage, and a dark halo. As Sorcerer King, he dons black-and-gold academic robes or ornate white-and-gold regalia. His alternate persona, the adventurer "Momon," wears black armor etched with purple-gold markings and wields twin greatswords.

He prioritizes Nazarick’s security through extreme caution, misinformation—such as falsifying Super-tier spell cooldowns—and brutal experimentation on New World denizens. While lacking empathy for outsiders, he exhibits paternal devotion to NPCs, seeing them as his guildmates’ "children."
