Description
Momonga, who later adopts the name Ainz Ooal Gown, is the main protagonist of the Overlord series. He was originally an ordinary Japanese salaryman named Satoru Suzuki whose primary escape from a mundane life was the DMMO-RPG YGGDRASIL. In that game, he played as a level one hundred Overlord, an undead skeleton mage known as a lich, and served as the guild master of the guild Ainz Ooal Gown. When the game's servers were scheduled to shut down, he remained logged in until the final moment, only to find himself transported to a new world permanently inhabiting his avatar's body. In this new world, he adopts the name Ainz Ooal Gown in honor of his former guild, partly as a way to search for any other guild members who might also be present.

Physically, Ainz Ooal Gown has the appearance of an Overlord, an undead skeleton creature devoid of skin and flesh, with a body composed purely of bones. He typically wears an elaborate jet-black academic gown adorned with golden and violet edges, and a dark red glow emanates from within his eye sockets. When in disguise, such as his adventurer persona Momon, he wears a full suit of armor with a red cape and carries two large swords.

His personality is marked by extreme caution and meticulous planning. He always tries to control details in advance and avoid haphazard actions, preferring to overkill his opponents rather than underestimate them. As an undead being in a real world, he finds his emotions becoming suppressed, making him feel colder and more calculating than he once was. However, he remains loyal to his friends from the game and to the NPCs of Nazarick, treating his devoted followers with a certain degree of nobility and acting as a father figure to them. He is rational and cares greatly about the preservation and prosperity of Nazarick above all else. While he does not hate humans, he holds no attachment to them and feels nothing toward their deaths, viewing them as tools to be used for his goals. He is described as stingy and competitive, with a tendency toward paranoia and pessimism about whether his followers might abandon him.

His primary motivations are to protect Nazarick, gather information about this unfamiliar world, and establish the legacy of Ainz Ooal Gown as an eternal legend. He prioritizes knowledge above almost everything else and is willing to engage in experiments and deception to obtain it. He seeks to find out if any of his former guild members exist in this new reality, and his actions are always directed toward benefiting Nazarick or himself, whether through information, prestige, or power.

In the story, Ainz Ooal Gown serves as the central figure and driving force of the narrative. He is the ruler of the Great Tomb of Nazarick and the most powerful magic caster in the world. In the second season of the anime, his role expands as he navigates political complexities, engages in conflicts such as the Lizardmen arc, and further establishes his influence. He is recognized as the Sorcerer King of the Sorcerer Kingdom, an entity both feared and respected. To interact with the world more freely and gather information, he adopts the secret identity of Momon, an adamantite-ranked adventurer and leader of the group Darkness, who is considered the strongest adventurer in E-Rantel.

His key relationships include his bond with the NPCs of Nazarick, who view him as the highest of the Forty-One Supreme Beings and offer him unwavering loyalty. Among these, his relationship with Albedo is particularly significant, as he altered her settings to make her deeply in love with him, though he struggles to manage her devotion. He also holds a special connection to Pandora's Actor, the NPC he personally created as the overseer of Nazarick's treasury and who acts as his doppelganger. Ainz cares for the NPCs deeply, seeing them as the children and creations of his missing friends, and he works to maintain their loyalty and well-being.

His development throughout the series involves a gradual transformation from a cautious, self-effacing former salaryman into a more confident and authoritative ruler. As he spends more time in his undead form, his human emotions become further suppressed, and he increasingly distances himself from human morality. While he sometimes questions the consequences of his actions, he steadily embraces his role as a supreme ruler, making strategic decisions with increasing authority. This change allows him to command the loyalty of his subjects and effectively manage the political landscape of the new world.

Regarding his abilities, Ainz is a level one hundred magic caster specialized in command magic, necromancy, instant death spells, and status ailments rather than direct damage. He possesses an enormous repertoire of spells, including the ability to stop time, summon and control vast armies of undead, and cast high-tier destructive magic. He has high resistance to many types of magic, especially those affecting the mind or emotions, and his undead body grants him immunity to disease, poison, and many physical attacks. He wields powerful magical items and artifacts accumulated by his guild during YGGDRASIL, including rings that allow him to equip multiple accessories. He is also highly intelligent and tactical, frequently using deception and careful strategy to outmaneuver his opponents. Despite his overwhelming power, he often considers himself to be of only upper-middle tier among YGGDRASIL players, as he prioritized roleplay-themed classes over pure combat optimization. His caution leads him to never underestimate any threat and to use overwhelming force whenever possible.
