Description
Hikari Tsutsui, nicknamed "Tsutsun," starts as a socially isolated high school student stigmatized by classmates for his otaku interests in anime, manga, and video games. He possesses dark blue hair, light blue eyes, and wears square-frame glasses, typically dressing in a cyan tie, white shirt, and navy dress pants. Harboring a strong aversion to real-world relationships, especially with girls whom he views as troublesome compared to fictional characters, his isolation results from prolonged bullying and rejection. His sole friend is fellow otaku Yuto Ito, recognizable by his cat-ear headband and shared interests.

His life shifts when assigned to clean the school pool as punishment for tardiness, pairing him with Iroha Igarashi, a beautiful but reputed delinquent. Despite initial skepticism—Iroha embodies traits he dislikes in "3D girls"—he gradually connects with her after intervening during harassment by her ex-boyfriend. This prompts Iroha to confess her feelings, leading to a relationship. She affectionately dubs him "Tsutsun" and remains fiercely protective, defending him against bullies and standing by him when false accusations label him a lolicon. Their relationship faces constraint from Iroha’s impending move in six months, later revealed as necessary for her brain tumor surgery.

Throughout the series, Hikari evolves from a reclusive, emotionally reserved individual into someone more socially engaged and expressive. He befriends classmates like Arisa Ishino, who initially scorns him but later offers relationship advice and friendship after recognizing his kindness. His bond with Yuto remains steadfast, with Hikari prioritizing their friendship alongside romance. Family dynamics reveal distance, particularly with his younger brother Kaoru, who openly disdains him and prioritizes his own reputation. Hikari’s parents, Mitsuru and Kie, receive minimal mention, underscoring his familial disconnect.

Critical developments include a misunderstanding where Hikari aids Mitsuya Takanashi’s sister, Anzu, after a fall. Mitsuya manipulates the situation to accuse him of inappropriate behavior, exacerbating Hikari’s social ostracization. Only Iroha and Yuto support him during this crisis. After Iroha departs for surgery in America, the procedure triggers retrograde amnesia, erasing memories of their relationship. Hikari endures a seven-year separation before reuniting with her in Japan. Though Iroha initially does not recognize him, their bond rekindles, culminating in marriage and the birth of a child.

Hikari’s personality combines introversion, empathy, and intellectual curiosity, with traits suggesting an INFP personality type and Enneagram Type 5 ("The Investigator"). He exhibits deep loyalty, pursues creative interests like novel-writing, and experiences anxiety under social judgment. His growth centers on embracing vulnerability, confronting insecurities, and valuing sincere connections over idealized perceptions.
