Description
Zero is the elder sister of the powerful demon Kirinmaru and a significant antagonist. Her history traces back to the Heian period, where she watched helplessly as her niece Rion died during a confrontation with samurai forces, slain by a half-demon. This tragedy fueled Kirinmaru's deep hatred for half-demons.
Zero harbored unrequited feelings for Tōga, the Great Dog Demon and father of Sesshōmaru and Inuyasha. Learning of Tōga's death while protecting his human wife Izayoi and newborn son Inuyasha, she shed a single tear onto the Shikon Jewel. This tear fractured the jewel, creating the seven Rainbow Pearls that contained her emotions and demonic powers, scattering them to prevent their full use. The Shikon Jewel had prophesied Kirinmaru's defeat by beings "neither human nor demon" and an "impossible entity surpassing time." To avert this fate, Zero targeted Sesshōmaru and Rin's half-demon twin daughters, Towa and Setsuna, and Inuyasha and Kagome's quarter-demon daughter, Moroha, viewing them as the prophesied threats.
Driven to ensure Kirinmaru's safety, Zero employed ruthless methods. She forged a life-force link with Rin using the Silver-Scale Curse, ensuring Rin would die if Zero were killed, thereby preventing Sesshōmaru from acting against her directly. She later commanded the fire demon Homura to burn the forest home of the four-year-old twins, aiming to eradicate them; though they survived, they were separated.
Zero demonstrated manipulative cunning, disguising herself as a human named Otsuyu to steal sealing abilities from the monk Miroku. She later trapped the celestial being Nanahoshi, using him to lure Towa during the new moon. Exploiting Towa's sorrow and isolation from the modern era, Zero forced her into a full-demon transformation.
Her character displayed arrogance and vindictiveness, particularly towards those tied to Tōga. She cruelly revealed to Riku—a being crafted from Kirinmaru's severed horn—his true origins before banishing him. Upon reclaiming the Rainbow Pearls, she absorbed memories of Tōga's human descendants, realizing Sesshōmaru had anticipated her actions by placing the pearls within his daughters' eyes.
Zero's downfall began when Setsuna severed the thread of fate connecting her to Tōga's spirit, destroying the Rainbow Pearls and unleashing Zero's sealed emotions. Overwhelmed by guilt and grief over Tōga's death, she gained clarity. She voluntarily severed the curse linking her life to Rin's, releasing Rin from the Silver-Scale Curse. In her final act, she asked Riku to end her life. Before dying, she absolved the half-demon princesses of responsibility for Kirinmaru's fate, urging Kirinmaru to accept that they might save him or Rion. She then disintegrated, her staff falling to the ground.
