Description
Sealed for 500 years atop Mount Gogyo, Son Goku is the legendary "Symbol of Chaos," possessing godlike power. Genjo Sanzo discovers and releases him during a mountain journey, initiating their association. Sanzo brings Goku to Keiunin temple, secretly sheltered under the Three Aspects.

Goku possesses a youthful appearance with tan skin, gold eyes, and notably long hair, initially in a ponytail. A defining gold diadem restrains his true form, Seiten Taisei (Great Sage Equaling Heaven). Removing or breaking the diadem triggers transformation: his hair lengthens, ears sharpen, pupils slit, claws and fangs emerge, and demon marks appear on his abdomen. These marks feature cursive kanji for "complete" or "perfect" within a sunburst. Unrestrained, Seiten Taisei exhibits heightened aggression, sadism, and near-uncontrollable destructive urges.

Goku's personality starkly contrasts between forms. Limited by the diadem, he displays a cheerful, childlike demeanor, often expressing hunger and engaging in playful mischief. He bonds easily, showing fierce loyalty, especially to Sanzo, whom he views as a father figure. This cheerfulness masks a deep fear of abandonment rooted in past trauma. As Seiten Taisei, his demeanor shifts to cruelty and violence; he treats combat as a brutal game, deriving pleasure from inflicting pain. This duality reflects his internal conflict between innate nature and adopted humanity.

His primary weapon is the Nyoi Bo, a staff extending in length or separating into chained sections for versatile combat. Goku demonstrates exceptional martial skill and agility even limited. As Seiten Taisei, his strength, speed, and durability escalate dramatically, nearing invincibility. He manipulates earth energy to heal severe injuries and sustain himself without sustenance. His earth connection also allows summoning elemental forces like thunderstorms during battle.

Born directly from the earth, Goku differs from humans and youkai. His sealing on Mount Gogyo resulted from being deemed a chaos harbinger. After Sanzo frees him, he integrates into the priest's life, though his presence frightens temple monks. His bond with Sanzo, Cho Hakkai, and Sha Gojyo forms their group's core. Key events involve accidental diadem breaks during emotional distress—like fearing Sanzo's abandonment or witnessing Sanzo's near-fatal injuries—forcing confrontations with his destructive true self. These incidents reveal his reliance on companions to regain equilibrium.

Goku's arc focuses on seeking belonging and acceptance. His relationships, particularly with Sanzo, provide stability that counters his chaotic potential. The westward journey begun in Saiyuki Reload: Burial frames his ongoing growth, balancing innate power with forged familial bonds.
