Description
Olivier, formally known as Olivier of Obsidian, is a supporting character in the anime The Case Study of Vanitas. He is a Paladin of the Chasseurs, the order of holy knights affiliated with the Catholic Church that is dedicated to hunting vampires, and he holds the title of Obsidian among the Twelve Paladins.
Olivier's background is shaped by the Church's belief that all vampires are inherently evil creatures. He has dedicated his life to their eradication in the name of his faith and has gained considerable experience hunting and killing vampires over the course of his service. He is also the Chasseur who originally recommended his longtime friend Roland Fortis to join the order; Roland later became a Paladin in his own right under the title of Jasper.
In terms of personality, Olivier is cool-headed, disciplined, and efficient. He shows no mercy toward vampires, viewing them as vile beings deserving of death. His serious and dutiful nature frequently clashes with Roland's more carefree and unrepentant attitude, and Olivier often chastises Roland about his conduct. Beneath his stern demeanor, he is genuinely concerned for Roland's safety and worries that his friend's behavior may one day put him in danger.
His motivations are driven primarily by religious conviction and a firm belief in the inherent evil of vampires, which compels him to pursue their extermination as part of his sacred duty. At the same time, he is motivated by loyalty and protectiveness toward Roland, his closest companion and fellow fighter.
In the story, Olivier becomes involved when Moreau's secret laboratory is destroyed deep within the catacombs of Paris. He goes to investigate the scene, where he encounters his fellow Paladin Roland Fortis, along with Maria and Georges. Throughout his appearances, he fights alongside Roland and serves as a stabilizing influence, balancing Roland's impulsive nature with his own measured and careful approach.
Regarding character development, Olivier's role is primarily defined through his duties as a Paladin and his friendship with Roland. His interactions with Roland reveal a protective and caring side beneath his zealous, disciplined exterior, even as his fundamental worldview as a devout vampire hunter remains consistent throughout the series.
In terms of notable abilities, Olivier is a highly experienced and capable fighter with substantial experience in hunting vampires. In battle, he wields the holy sword Hauteclaire, and he operates as an effective combatant in the Chasseurs' operations.
