Description
In the anime The Vampire Dies in No Time, the character is officially named Draluc, with the spelling "Dralc" appearing as a minor variation in some promotional materials. Draluc is one of the main protagonists and an immortal higher vampire, who is 208 years old and of mixed Romanian and Japanese heritage, having been born in Transylvania. He lives with his familiar, a three-banded armadillo named John, and is known to be a descendant of the prestigious Dragon Clan, which grants him a high resistance to hypnosis and other mental influences.
Physically, Draluc has a pale and bony complexion, pointed ears and nose, lazy-looking eyes, and short black hair combed backward, which is a hairstyle characteristic of his family line. He typically dresses in the classic vampire attire of a black suit, white gloves, a white cravat, and a large matching cape. Despite his fearsome reputation as an invincible vampire lord, he is in reality the weakest vampire, possessing an extremely frail body that can be killed by almost anything. Even minor physical contact, a loud noise, emotional shock, or harsh words will cause him to instantly disintegrate into a pile of sand, a fate he typically meets with his signature exclamation. His core ability is his rapid and near-limitless regeneration, which allows him to reconstitute himself from his ashes almost immediately, provided his remains are not interfered with in a way that could permanently destroy him, such as being left in sunlight for too long.
Draluc's personality is a contrast of pride and slovenliness. As a high-ranking vampire, he is naturally arrogant and speaking down to humans, and he possesses a self-centered, hedonistic nature, seeking amusement in whatever catches his interest. He is often described as a lazy, good-for-nothing middle-aged man who much prefers to stay indoors playing video games than engage in typical vampire activities like hunting humans. He is a vegetarian vampire, so far removed from drinking blood that when he attempts to do so, the rich taste kills him instantly, leading him to subsist primarily on milk due to his weak stomach. Despite his many flaws, he has a kind nature and will actively help his allies when they are in real danger, even if he initially abandoned them to save himself. He is also surprisingly clever and quick-thinking, often using his intelligence and unorthodox ideas to resolve the problems the group faces.
His role in the story begins when the renowned vampire hunter Ronaldo storms his castle to rescue a missing child, accidentally destroying Draluc in the process and later demolishing his home. Left homeless, Draluc forcibly moves into Ronaldo's office and becomes his roommate and unofficial partner, much to the hunter's dismay. The public's positive reaction to their team-up, as documented in Ronaldo's popular book series, The Ronaldo Chronicles, pressures Ronaldo into keeping Draluc around, and they form an odd-couple pair who solve various cases involving other vampires. Draluc addresses Ronaldo as "young man" and frequently engages in petty arguments and mutual verbal abuse with him, though they develop a functional working relationship. His most important relationship is with his armadillo familiar, John, for whom he has a deep, caring affection and often uses as a shield in a maneuver known as John Defense. He is an excellent caretaker, taking responsibility for all the cooking and housework at Ronaldo's office, and his skills in the kitchen are considered supreme, a talent he claims is necessary for luring human prey.
Draluc's notable abilities beyond his signature death and regeneration are largely domestic or niche. He is a professional-level gamer, known for his incredible skill and for having a bizarre passion for playing and reviewing terrible, low-quality video games. He is also a talented cook and baker, with his sweets being particularly popular. As a vampire, he can attempt to transform into a bat, but his transformations almost always go wrong, resulting in malformed creatures, forcing him to turn to dust to revert to his normal form. He also possesses a potent resistance to hypnotic abilities, thanks to his pure bloodline, though this is rendered somewhat moot by his physical weakness. His singing voice is also notably terrible, described as being akin to a monotone chant.
