Description
Kojirō Sasaki is a legendary swordsman from the Edo period who was killed in his famous duel with his rival Miyamoto Musashi on Ganryu Island. Roughly four hundred years later, he is resurrected from the dead by Kumo Otoko, the Spider Man, acting under the orders of the demonic samurai Takeshi Onimaru. As a resurrected being, he has the appearance of a zombie, characterized by his red eyes and total lack of aging, retaining the youthful and handsome visage he had at the moment of his death. He wears his long black hair tied high and dresses in an elegant blue kimono with a decorative haori.

Sasaki is highly charismatic and possesses an extremely flamboyant and narcissistic personality, often referring to himself as a genius swordsman and a super ultra hyper deluxe handsome swordsman. He is an incorrigible womanizer who is easily distracted by the presence of attractive women, a trait that often derails his immediate objectives. He is initially portrayed as opportunistic and duplicitous, possessing a strong sense of self-preservation that makes him willing to switch allegiances if it benefits him. Despite these flaws, he harbors a deep and genuine pride in his swordsmanship and carries a heavy grudge over his defeat by Musashi.

His primary motivation upon revival is to exact revenge on Musashi. This goal quickly shifts when Kumo Otoko tricks him with a false fortune, telling him that Yaiba Kurogane is the strongest samurai in the world. Sasaki then becomes obsessed with defeating Yaiba to prove he is the greatest, and he also lusts after Yaiba’s Raijin Sword, believing it holds ultimate power. As the story progresses, his motivations mellow and he seeks to refine his skills for the sake of his own pride. By the end of the story, he seeks a new purpose, transitioning away from martial combat entirely.

Sasaki begins his role in the narrative as a dangerous antagonist, an obstacle sent to destroy the hero. He quickly refuses to become Onimaru’s direct servant, establishing himself as an independent wild card. His allegiance shifts throughout the story, and he eventually settles into the role of an unpredictable and unreliable ally to Yaiba’s group. He joins the heroes on their journey, often contributing his immense combat power while providing comic relief through his flirtatious nature and constant bickering with Musashi.

His defining relationship is with Miyamoto Musashi, his eternal rival. The two constantly compete and insult each other, but they share a deep, unspoken respect and will fight alongside one another when facing a common enemy. His relationship with Yaiba evolves from outright hostility to a complex rivalry and eventually a genuine friendship, though Sasaki is too proud to fully admit it. He holds a dismissive attitude toward Sayaka Mine, seeing her as a child compared to the older women he prefers, but still fights alongside her. He interacts as a friendly equal with fellow legendary swordsmen like Jubei Yagyu.

Sasaki undergoes significant personal development. He begins as a bitter, vengeful spirit obsessed with the past and consumed by his defeat. Through his time spent with Yaiba and the others, he learns to live in the present and develops a genuine sense of camaraderie. He temporarily gives up his womanizing to dedicate himself completely to training for the Oda Nobunaga tournament, demonstrating his capacity for discipline and growth. By the end of the story, he has set aside his quest for supremacy and becomes a popular stage actor in historical dramas, using his genuine swordsmanship in choreographed fights and enjoying the attention of his many fans.

Sasaki is renowned for his supreme swordsmanship, hailed by Musashi himself as a once-in-a-century genius. He wields the cursed sword Monohoshizao, an incredibly sharp blade that can extend to impossible lengths on his command. This sword also possesses the ability to warp space and time. His signature technique is the Tsubame Gaeshi, or Swallow Reversal, a devastating move that strikes his opponent from three directions simultaneously. His swordsmanship is so refined that he can hold his own against the absolute strongest warriors in the series such as Jubei Yagyu, solidifying his reputation as one of the most formidable fighters in the world.
